It seems like the Fallout fanbase is strictly divided up between people who like only Fallout 1, 2, and New Vegas, and people who prefer Bethesda's Fallout games.
What gives? Having never played a Fallout game before, I don't know what to think of the series. I've developed a hatred for Bethesda over the years for how they've consistently dumbed down the Elder Scrolls series, so I'm tempted to avoid the Bethesda Fallouts, but at the same time I've heard several highly respected gamers (like Lazy Game Reviews) praise Fallout 3 in particular.
Has anyone else noticed this sharp divide in the Fallout fanbase? It seems to be a series with one of the more toxic communities in the game industry.

I'll agree that the subject title is a little strong...
The Fallout fanbase isn't that bad - I would even say it's better than the Elder Scrolls one. Of course, the golden standard for toxic fanbases is still Sonic, though.

Cervantes The Sonic fanbase has different problems, though, mostly involving rowdy underage kids as well as some childish adults who draw/write fan porn. The problem with the Fallout fanbase is that its literally at war with itself, which is a similar problem with the SSB fanbase actually, as well as the Elder Scrolls fanbase, as you mentioned. It's a different kind of "toxic".

After the whole Todd Howard implosion back when Fallout 76 released, I realized that the Fallout fandom does in fact have cancer: it's called the Obsidian fandom.  The only reason why these Bethesda fandoms got so bad is because of all of these outside influences constantly trashing them up, namely the Obsidian and the CD Projekt Red fandoms. I never understood this back in the day but it's clear as crystal to me now. And to think that I was actually mislead into believing that Todd Howard was actually a bad game designer by these Witcher & New Vegas fanboy assholes. As an old school Bethesda fanboy I really, REALLY fucking despise the Obsidian fandom and the CD Projekt Red fandoms for the deadly amounts of shade they threw at Todd Howard's career. It was already bad enough that Bethesda Softworks was already in the process of committing PR suicide by implementing paid mods into their business models plus other such heinous bullshit, but the nail in the coffin for Todd were these two fandoms making a mockery out of him. Now that Microsoft bought them out, it basically means that I as an old school elder scrolls fanboy have to officially wave goodbye to everything that made that series so exceptional. Todd Howard and Bethesda gaming will never be the same again.  I don't even hate Skyrim anymore. I acknowledge I was wrong about it. Just because it was a bad Elder Scrolls game doesn't change the fact that it had the single best console & modding community for a game of its time. So it doesn't deserve anything worse than a 3/5 IMO. What happened to Todd Howard completely changed the way I look at the video game industry and especially the fandoms that come with it. It really was one of the biggest scandals in modern video gaming and to say it was beyond disrespectful is an understatement. I hope Obsidian and CD Projekt Red go bankrupt for what their shit fandoms have done to Howard. I'm glad I changed the thread title back to what it originally was because as it turned out, Obsidian fanboys really were cancerous all along. Their cancer killed Todd Howard's career. |
