I don't think I ever got passed the pod races. I never found the game to be special even as a kid but its not terrible, my vote is 3.

I has a great first level, I guess. I remember everything being downhill from there.
Edit: Here's a good review of it.

The first Star Wars game I played on my Nintendo 64 was Rogue Squadron. After that no other Star Wars game looked remotely interesting. Rogue Squadron was so satisfying for me that I didn't need anything else.
When I saw the other games had on foot missions it was an instant turn off. I remember renting one of those on foot mission Star Wars games and getting super dissapointed. I never rented them again.
The only other Star Wars game on the Nintendo 64 I actually bought besides Rogue Squadron was Episode I Battle For Naboo, which obviously wasn't as good as something like F-Zero, not even like Mario Kart, but it was entertaining enough to at least have it. Any other Star Wars game was just not for me.

I owned this and was quite fond of it, but I don't think it holds up very well.

So my nickname is Jar Jar Binks now? Whatever floats your boat, Balder.
Yes, I selected SOTE as our game discussion this week. Since it's the month of May, the unnofficial month of Star Wars, I thought it would be a good idea to look back at one of the earliest N64 releases.
While it's true that the gameplay of SOTE was never that great, the atmosphere and especially the art direction certainly was great. Few games can match the artistic quality of Shadow of the Empire, and the comic book style cutscenes speak for themselves and stand as some of the best traditional art ever produced in the entire Star Wars franchise. The game's atmosphere is only enhanced by the haunting John Williams score in addition to some amazing new tracks composed exclusively for the game. The theme for Xixor's palace being a standout.
But like I said, it's the art direction which makes SOTE so special. The cutscenes really do feel like a high quality comic book come to life. Someone on Youtube uploaded a collection of all the cutscenes from the N64 version of the game on Youtube that I was planning on showing everyone here, but those god damn fucking cocksuckers at Disney copyrighted the video and took it down, and I can't find them anywhere else on Youtube.
If you're going to play this game, you NEED to play the N64 version. The PC port replaced the hand drawn cutscenes with god awful CG, so the storytelling in the port doesn't come anywhere near close to the original N64 version.
Yuck! Point made.
Even though I don't play it very often, Shadow of the Empire will probably always remain my second favorite Star Wars game and it's likely that its art direction will never be surpassed by another Star Wars game. For any diehard fans of the original trilogy, or fans of comic books, Shadow of the Empire is a must-play (on the N64).

Ah, Shadows of the Empire! It has been so long since I played this game. One of my first tastes of the N64 and 3D platform/action games. I remember the awkward controls, especially when you get the jetpack. I remember the wampas you could release inside the Hoth base and let them loose on snow troopers, and they would take ridiculous amounts of firepower to kill. And the junkyard train wehre you had to time your jumps right. Then there was the fight with Boba Fett...bla bla bla
This game was based on a novel, wasn't it? Or was it the othe way around? The story was apparently how they got info on the second Death Star from Ep6.

I looked into it and considering the dates I would say the first level everyone praises was basically a massive teaser for the making of Rogue Squadron. Then the actual Shadow Of The Empire game starts, it was a different studio though. I do agree about the N64 artwork for the cutscenes, it looks really cool.

I'm not sure it was a different studio, but that would definitely explain A LOT. Rogue Squadron is a pretty fun game for its time (too bad I've never played the sequels).
