Seeing as how the month of Star Wars is coming to an end, I'd like to hear your thoughts on the father of Star Wars himself, George Lucas. (no poll this time; I couldn't even begin to think of viable options for poll answers) Discuss.

Say what you want about the man, but I love Lucas for taking some risks. He created Star Wars because he's a visionary director. He wrote all 6 original Star Wars movies, plus Indiana Jones. The man sure knows how to create some super rich and interesting universes. The prequels are mixed, but at least they are original and take some risks compared to Disney Star Wars who basically wants another MCU. I think the sellout to Disney is one of the worst trades in history, maybe ever. People always talk down on Lucas, but I'll defend him. He's a visionary director whose legacy has been tainted by a few bad calls.

He has great ideas, but I think he is not very good as a director or as a writer - he is at his best when there are more people helping to bring his ideas to life. I think the main problem with the prequels is that he became so legendary by then that no one had courage to question some of his worst decisions or to fix some of the terrible dialogues written for those movies.
He creates great characters, fictional worlds and situations, and also knows how to homage classic cinema (which movies to borrow from). If there's someone else to fix the script and actually direct the movie, then there's a good chance it will turn out good.

I was originally going to use this picture in my OP but I wanted this to be a serious discussion. I still can't help but marvel at it though.... In all seriousness, I like George Lucas. For all his shortcomings throughout his later career, he still is a terrific storyteller. And he definitely got the right artists to perfectly bring his dream to life; I love the art direction for both the OT and the prequels. While I admire the man and can forgive his mistakes with the prequels, I will never forgive his decisions regarding ANYTHING animation related; his refusal to produce Little Nemo offends me, and The Clone Wars animated series is easily one of the most pretentious things I've ever seen.

I've seen worse. There are ways to make cheesy stuff like that work on your favour. Although I think Lucas identifies himself a lot with Jabba the Hutt, meaning he buys into the idea that in order to bang princesses he needs to rely on kidnapping them. Which means he feels inferior in that respect, but then again those are just my own speculations.

2022 UPDATE: I hate George Lucas because he led me astray as a child by glamorizing technology and space colonization. If there's one thing that's sure to get you on my shit list, it's leading me astray.
Don't fuck with me, George. I want the truth.

Sorry to hear about your ashtray. Not many people smoke inside their homes these days.
I used to live in an apartment where the nicotine would bleed down the walls. I'm pretty sure it was haunted.

Oh? You're still in denial about Hollywood's reputation of glamorizing terrible things like guns, warfare, technology, etc? Perhaps I should remind you of that interview with Oliver Stone where he denounced Saving Private Ryan as the shameless military propaganda that it is: "Black Hawk Down is a well-made movie, but it's in praise of technology. Even in Saving Private Ryan, you saw the worship of World War II as the good war. Gladiator in 2001 was part of that war mindset. By the time of the Iraq War, we were ready to go back. America loves war, America depends on war, and so does its industry."

If industry veterans like Oliver Stone can see these flaws in american filmmaking, then I shouldn't have to question whether I'm right about this issue or not. Get the fuck out of my face already and go do some actual research on the subject of Hollywood before denouncing me as a loony, you god-damned pig.

Here's another reason to hate George Lucas: Willow Willow was one of the most blatant LOTR knock-offs I've ever seen. George Lucas tried to get away with ripping off another hit franchise a second time around, except this time it didn't pay off for him! HAHA, what a loser. I'm not even a LOTR fan and even I hate this film. Maybe instead of making a straight knock-off of LOTR, he should have done the right thing by acquiring the rights to make his own official love action adaption of LOTR (which would have been the first, I believe). But noooo, he's too original for that. What an asshole. I'm SO glad this film flopped hard and got panned when it came out. God bless Siskel and Ebert for trashing this film hard upon release. Apparently audiences listened to them and avoided this turd of a film like the plague. Good for them.

His first movie THX whatever was poorly excecuted. Even if the message is good the delivery was awful.
I get it that the intention is to put you in present time in the future so adding a back story or developing characters goes against that concept, but who cares, it is still awful.
It is not a VR game, it's a movie, it is supposed to have a narrative.
In his defense their was no VR games at the time, and even if there were, I would still feel it was poorly excecuted and with an awful delivery.
He learned with American Graffiti to do things right. It is still the same concept, but the delivery is good, and the execution is adequate for the medium. I wouldn't call American Graffiti a movie, it is more like an experience that is meant to elicit nostalgia, and it works even if your mom wasn't still born when the movie was based.
American Graffiti also has my favorite soundtrack in a movie of all time, and one of the best executions when it comes to presenting it without fear of success, just balls out on your face type of deal.
Now Star Wars adds narration and character development even further while keeping the same concept of avoiding a backstory to take away from the present experience, and the only explanation is a few paragraphs written at the beginning of the film.
So no wonder it is one of the most successful franchises of all time because it took a lot of refinement to present it that way.
Even if he stole ideas from different sources it is still original because it puts everything together in a way that resonates with the inner truths people are born with, and that's one of the biggest reasons why it is a very captivating Universe.
