I heard about his game a few days ago. Active Shooter is an upcoming PC exclusive FPS that is basically just a variation of Counter Strike, except instead of terrorists vs counter terrorists, it's lone school shooter vs police/swat team.
Thoughts? Honestly, controversy aside, I think it sounds like a fun game. I think it's dumb that politicians are throwing a fit over this game when it's been proven that violent media doesn't turn people into murderers, nor does it give them power to murder people (like actual weapons do). This debate has been around since the beginning of 20th century and I'm sick of it.

It's insensitive and takes a lack of empathy to release any game/movie like this right now, considering how common these things became in the US lately - you guys had literally TWENTY THREE school shootings just this year, this is insane; all this in just five months.
But besides that, meh. The news will throw a tantrum over it and try to say that videogames are the true cause of those 23 shootings (hell, the president himself has already done it in a fancy meeting), there will be a fake controversy and, after all of it, nothing will be done to fix any of the real issues behind the shootings.
Then other big ones will come, the media/politicians will blame videogames again etc. I mean, isn't the US stuck in this loop since Columbine? That was 19 years ago, it's a lot of time to start looking into the actual problems.

People wonder why politicians blame video games? With shit like this, it's hard to defend them. It's just so insensitive and screams for attention. Jimquisition had an episode recently about this game.

That was 19 years ago, it's a lot of time to start looking into the actual problems. The media needs to blame themselves, they encourage it. One: the 23 times so far is false (https://www.dailywire.com/node/27165). They include two suicides, an officer having a negligent discharge, etc as "school shootings." Two: Look at the video of the recent reject at Parkland (http://video.foxnews.com/v/5791558808001/?#sp=show-clips). He talks about how famous he is going to be. Reject in Sandy Hook wanted to beat the Norway nutjob for body count.
They need to be treated like bad actors in history. Roman and Egypt would block out their memory. Name never spoken again, accomplishments ignore, and all history wiped out.

scipioafricanus - The way american media covers these incidents is definitely one of the problems. There are others, of course; I mean, even in highly violent countries like Brazil shootings are almost always related to gangs, drug trafficking, police violence or armed robbery, it's not common that a random teenager just decided to get a lot of guns, enter his school and kill as many people as he can; or a random guy went to the top of a building and started shooting at random or any other cases like that. This is highly abnormal even in countries that are much, much more violent than the US. I certainly don't want to get into any discussion about what solutions should be pursued (I think we discussed that in other threads), but the point is: none of them is ever looked at because, hey, it's easier to blame music/games/movies/tv and just do absolutely nothing. Then some games try to ride on the controversy. It's both insensitive, completely lacks any empathy and gives even more fuel to the scare tactics employed by sensationalist media. That is some shitty behaviour right there.

Anyone here remember those shitty flash games back in the day that were about school shootings? Like Pico's School or V-Tech rampage? Edgy games are nothing new, but there never seems to be a shortage of sub-humans who are eager to act morally outraged and make it a headline so they can get a quick buck.

As shitty as the mentality behind of some of these games can be (attention seeking mentality), they would still amount to nothing of importance if it wasn't for the news trying to make something important out of them. I mean, no one would even know about another shitty FPS on Steam if it wasn't for the manufactured controversy.

I just read the wikipedia page for it and saw that it has officially been canceled. Darn. Upon further reading I discovered that the whole game was just a hoax as a way for the creator to make Valve look bad for supposedly taking down a game he had previously made.
For the record, I don't think there's anything wrong with making a game about mass shootings, just as long as it has an appropriate ESRB rating. In this case, there was no reason to get concerned about kids playing the game because 1. it was a PC exclusive (most kids play on consoles), and 2. it would've gotten an AO rating, which would've assured that kids could not get access to the game on their own.
I'm so freaking tired of censorship in the entertainment industry. Ratings for movies and games exist for a reason. If the parents are stupid/uncaring enough to expose their kids to inappropriate content, it's 100% the parents fault.
Blame the parenting, not the product. End of story.

It sounds like Gal*Gun, except that in Gal*Gun you shoot sex hormones as opposed of dealy bullets. I heard there is a VR version for Gal*Gun, but only the PC people are lucky enough to have it.

Of all the games in the world to play, why anyone would pick this one (or anything like it) is beyond me.

Pardon me for hijacking this thread, but has anyone ever heard of 'Yukiko Syndrome'?
It was named after a Japanese pop idol Yukiko Okada who, in 1986, committed suicide.
(Wikipedia)
On April 8, 1986, Okada was found with a slashed wrist in her gas-filled Tokyo apartment, crouching in a closet and crying by the manager of the Sun Music Building. He took her to a nearby hospital where her injuries were treated and she was brought back to the building. The manager found several notes written by Okada and Okada wanting a relationship with actor Toru Minegishi. While Fudaka, the manager of the building and the staffs were discussing how to avoid a media scandal, Okada ran up to the stairs, took off her shoes and jumped to her death from the seven story building.
I wonder: are these school shootings America's own form of Yukiko Syndrome? With all the coverage surrounding each shooting, can it inspire an malcontent mistreated student to,' how should we say, 'go out with a bang' in a twisted act of 'martyrdom'?
Oh, did you also know that the Columbine killers have fan girls?
What good are fans when you're burning in hell for all eternity?

Of all the games in the world to play, why anyone would pick this one (or anything like it) is beyond me. Of all the countries in the world to live, why anyone would pick one where mass shooting happen every week and gun control is virtually non-existent is beyond me. I don't understand why people enjoy gunning pedestrians down and running them over in Grand Theft Auto, but when a different game does the same thing in a school setting it becomes "unacceptable". Shooters of every kind have always involved killing innocent people at some point, and if GTA didn't let you do it, nobody would want to play it. I just don't see why there's a fuss being thrown about this when video games have never been responsible for shootings.

@centipide you're not hijacking the thread, this is your forum as well, I think Cervantes would agree you have a good point there, maybe that's part of it, but let's not forget that the U.S. is basically an experiment for how eventually the new world order would run on every country, and anything that happens here is often a sign of greater plans.

centipede - Yes, some people are messed up in what they choose to be a fan of and there's definitely some form of Werther Effect at play. With this talk about how the media reports things I keep thinking about this huge problem: on one hand, you want to held the media accountable for what they do and to avoid the existence of sensationalist news; on the other hand, creating laws to held media accountable can very easily go out of control and lead to censor, which is also terrible. But there should be at least some guidelines to how certain crimes and controversies should be covered.

I just don't see why there's a fuss being thrown about this when video games have never been responsible for shootings. There's no need to get so defensive all the time, man. We're talking about video games here. I know that lots of people play shooting games or even fighting games to let out some aggression or relieve stress. Whatever someone does in the comfort of their own home, so long as they aren't hurting anyone or themselves, it's all good. If playing violent video games keeps you from feeling stressed and makes you happy and keeps you from acting violently IRL, that sounds like a win to me. But this game looks like garbage. Just from the video above, graphically, gameplay-wise, you name it - there's nothing there that looks like anything beyond what it actually is. And that's an obvious grab for attention. All the school shootings in the headlines and they want to make a school shooting simulator. Real classy. Honestly, considering all of your posts about Art Direction in Paper Mario and the finer nuances of gameplay in SSB Melee, I'm surprised to see you show so much interest in such a shallow looking game. Like they said in the video above, if anyone finds themselves thinking violent thoughts often, just get professional help. There's no shame in that. These days you can even talk to therapists online if you want. Other than that, all I'll say is life's too short to play bad video games.
