This week's animation director topic: Brad Bird (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, that movie about rats in France, etc.) What do you guys think of him as an artist? As a director? How do you feel about his animated films? Discuss.

Brad Bird is without a doubt in my mind one of the most grossly overrated figures in the animation world. Literally any Japenese animator can outdraw him, and I'm sure even many Korean animators could, too. I've never liked any of his films; The Iron Giant was average at best in every respect, and The Incredibles was one of the most uninspired, visually underwhelming superhero films I have ever seen; the latter's island subplot being a shameless ripoff of the Jonny Quest episode The Fraudulent Volcano, a series which Brad Bird has admitted to being a huge fan of.
He's never proved to be a good artist yet talks about the art world like he revolutionized it, and even has shown the nerve to mock other artists who are worlds better than him. His egotism is disgusting. And despite all this, he's still one of the most acclaimed, financially successful and well known figures in animation.
I hate his signature simplistic, angular visual style, I hate his lack of artistic ambition in his projects, I hate his ego, I hate his mockery of his superiors, I hate his success, and I hate him.
People like him are the reason why I hate the animation industry and the art world as a whole.

Iron Giant was fantastic. Incredibles as well. Ratatouille was OK, too. What the guy says in interviews is as unimportant to me as you can possibly imagine.

To quote Mr. Incredible: "Why should we praise mediocrity?"? Why does Brad Bird deserve the most praise of any living animation director while far more talented artists like Steve Rude can't even sell their ideas for TV shows to producers? In reality it's because american animation is just about making money, and neither the academy nor the general public understands art. Even as a cartoonist Bird is outclassed by so many better artists in that field, like Sylvain Chomet and (the retired) Richard Williams. He's a hack, period.

He actually says something more alone the lines of "It's psychotic! They keep coming up with new ways to celebrate mediocrity..." when discussing Dash's school graduation ceremony while arguing with his wife. I watched The Incredibles all the time back when I was a kid and loved it then. But now I'm an adult with a developed taste in art, who has experienced the art world...needless to say I don't like the film anymore. At all.

Yes, mostly on my own time, although I did take a semester-long college course in traditional art. I may have flunked hard, but boy did I learn a lot. But I think coming from a family of artists is what really helped me get into art and adopt it as a hobby, even though it's definitely not my passion in life.

Is anyone else here aware of Bird's animation pitch for The Spirit?
He was trying to turn a legendary comic strip into a fucking Disney cartoon! Even Captain Planet's visual design more closely resembles comic books than this shit does! I've said it before and I'll say it again, Brad Bird is an overrated turd and has always been one of the biggest threats to preserving the quality of the comic book animation sub genre. He is truly a massive hack among modern-era animators.
