So I'm considering getting a Wii U, of all the modern stuff it's the only thing that interests me. I currently own a Wii (soft modded) and a Playstation 2 and I just want something a bit more modern with online multiplayer support and the Wii U really does interest me. It's not something I can just go out and buy, I would have to save and my fear is is that the NX gets released towards the end of the year and Nintendo stops supporting the Wii U. For example, Nintendo shut off the Wii's servers nerfing a lot of great games. On the other hand, I know that if I wait for the NX's release the Wii U hardware will become dirt cheap. Also, I lack a HD television, personally HD doesn't interest me and my set if a twenty year old CRT.
What do you guys think?

Hey there yar2084. I own a Wii U myself, but wouldn't recommend it solely based on that. There are definitely a fair number of console-exclusives for the system, and I consider them to have been enough to justify my purchase. That said, one of your criteria is online multiplayer, and while some Nintendo exclusives do support this (Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8, etc), I don't think anyone would point to a Nintendo console as a premiere online multiplayer service.
That said, since you'd have to save anyway, it might be worth saving a bit and seeing what gets announced in a few months at E3. Even now though, if you're willing to pick up a used console, you can find some pretty deals on a Wii U and games.

I agree that if you're looking for a competitive online scene, the WiiU isn't the best choice...which is fine by me, since I don't play much online anyway. There is no online service that will last forever, so if you're into that enjoy it while you can-- whatever console you're using. I personally want a WiiU for the exclusive titles you can't get anywhere else, the best selection of downloadable classic titles via the eShop, and some interesting hardware features (ex. playing offscreen with the gamepad when someone else wants to use the TV).
P.S.: since you have a CRT, don't forget to enjoy all the light gun games on your PS2!

What's probably gonna end up happening is NX will be released and then not too long after PS5 and Xboxwhatever will be released which will make Nintendo's console vastly inferior AGAIN. So I'd just get the Wii U.

I've been asking myself the same question for five years and have not caved in on it or any of the modern consoles.
The key question to ask yourself is what it is about the Wii U that interests you. If it is playing games like Mario Kart 8, Smash U, Mario Maker and Splatoon online, then your fears are warranted as it took approximately 7 years for the Wii services to be curtailed. If the less popular selling Wii U abides by a similar principle, its connective multiplayer services should be down in 2-3 years and I don't see why it wouldn't as I don't see waves of fans lining up to support it.
Now as far as software library goes, it depends how much you mind buying digital purchases as well. Much of the physical media for the console remains highly priced while PS4 software drops rapidly and there are no signs of it dropping EVER. I only bring this up because it sounds as though you are budget conscious as I am about collecting and why buy games for a console that is likely only going to receive a short amount of air-time? In my five years of PONDering, I haven't been able to justify it once.

I'll add to this that, as you mentioned, you don't much care for an HD-television. But much as a lot of older consoles were designed to look best a 4:3 CRT screen. But, any of the modern consoles are designed to look best on an HD-screen. That said, because the Wii U does come with the gamepad, you will have a small 16:9 screen with it that isn't too bad. I played a lot of Wind Waker HD exclusively on the game pad.

If you're worried about cash, I would wait until the end of the year; however, there are some really great bundles out there right now. I'm a bit jealous that they weren't available when I got mine. Since you seem to be on the fence over cost, and you'd like to play now, perhaps you should look for a used one from a local shop? Game Stop sucks, and their used prices are not too far off from new systems. If you're waiting for a significant price drop though, I'd wait it out until the next holiday season. teddykongcountry, I've bought most of my 3rd party games from Amazon for less than $20 a pop. It is the damn 1st party titles which are retaining their value. Scalpers are annoying the hell out of me as of late. I've watched a few CU Podcasts as of late, and they are pointing out what I've noticed for quite a few titles as of late. Titles like Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, and New Super Mario Wii U keep fluctuating from $50-$80 at random it seems. (Don't get me started on the insanity created over Devil's Third.)

Hey guys, thanks for your replies When I say I want the online stuff, I'm not massively into it myself, but for example, I play the Wii versions of Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3 which still have servers. I just don't want to buy the hardware, buy Splatoon, Smash and Mario Kart and then Nintendo nerfs the online. With regards to the library of games, it seems Nintendo offers the games I really enjoy the most. If I were to go for a PS4/Xbone or even the PS3 or 360 I would not know where to begin with what games to choose, I'm that far removed from modern gaming, where as with Nintendo stuff, I find you know what you're getting and the aesthetic of their games appeal to me, plus they do have a COD The price of the games puts me off, I'm poor haha, but the price of their digital stuff is insane, I purchased a 2ds recently and had a look at maybe purchasing Smash Bros from the e shop but it's £40! I purchased the actual game from my local game shop for £32, its crazy! Also, the tv, is it time to upgrade?

Also, the tv, is it time to upgrade? Yeah, it is time to upgrade. I put it off as long as I could too. I have kept my tube TV for my older systems. The Atari does not look right on an LCD TV. I will say that HD viewing is a world of a difference. I may never watch a hockey game on a standard TV again! The prices have dropped exponentially, so there really isn't a reason not to these days.

yar2084: just make sure that you get an HDTV with the greatest number of input interfaces (coax, composite/'RCA', component, VGA, HDMI etc.). Many manufacturers are eliminating older interfaces on their new models, forcing some people to look for compatible adapters. Plasmas are good (high black levels and refresh rates), especially if you're in a low light environment, but the choice is up to you. As always, do your research and check out reviews before selecting a model; whether its games or electronics in general, I'll never understand people who don't do this and then complain about the outcome. And keep your CRT as long as it works!

Yeah, I would say it is a good time to get an HDTV. You don't need a particularly high end TV, and as long as it isn't a smart TV, they are surprisingly inexpensive. Pretty easy to find used as well.

Hmmm, I'll have a look at what I can get. I don't actually own anything that outputs to HD currently I don't think and my soft modded Wii emulates the consoles I wish to play, but the TV is 20 years old and I realise that to get the best out of anything modern I'd need HD.

Oh, definitely. No point in getting an HDTV until you actually decide on a modern console, but might be worth pricing it out and adding it to your savings goals. That said, if you do, I recommend grabbing one of these guys for your Wii: goo.gl/xTj5OHVideo/audio quality is comparable to the Wii component cables, so still just 480p, but fewer cords and nicer than the picture from composite cables.

Has anyone mentioned that Nintendo's main thing is not the Wii U, but the 3DS? It wouldn't be cool if he got the system under a wrong impression.

I got a 2DS about a week ago, bought several games brand new and absolutely love it, it's truly an awesome little system, I've 12 hours into Pokemon Omega Ruby already. And it's wood grained....
