Spirit Bomb - That just, like, your opinion, man. You know, it's just a matter of personal preference. I prefer the humor, the sense of childish wonder and adventure of the first series, plus the plethora of fun characters that were set aside in Z. I like Z too, of course, but it has too much focus on the fights themselves and they get too padded out. I don't care much for power levels and grandeur: the interactions between fun characters is the heart of the show for me. But that must also be a cultural thing: Dragon Ball Z seems to be the first big "fighting" anime hit in the US, but when it aired in Latin America we had all already watched Saint Seiya, plus others like Yu Yu Hakusho, Shurato, Dragon Quest: Dai no Daiboken and the OG Dragon Ball itself, while the girls had Sailor Moon and Magic Knight Rayearth; on the live action/tokusatsu side, I grew up watching Jaspion, Kamen Rider, Jiraya, Solbrain and a few others, so Dragon Ball Z made less of an impression over here in its first run, as we were already used to the genre. Keep in mind I consider both DB and DBZ among the best anime ever made, so much that I have the complete manga, which is also lovely. I just very personally have more of a soft spot for the adventure and humor of the first series (by the way, the manga doesn't do a distinction between them and was published as a single series, so the tone/style is more consistent throughout the whole story and I love the entirety of it). But this is also just, like, my opinion, man. Edit: The DVD box thing was really funny, everything about the Mega Man cartoon seems to be planned to disappoint uninformed viewers, hahaha!

I'm sorry I doubted you, then. I hadn't initially noticed your remark about Dragon Ball 1 & 2, so I had to call you out there. Comparing DB to Z is akin to comparing apples to oranges because of how different they are (as you pointed out), but it was Z that ultimately had a bigger impact on anime as a whole. Personally, I'm glad that Toriyama tried a different approach with Z, because otherwise fans of the original Dragon Ball would've probably felt it was "too samey" or more of the same, anyways, and would've criticized it for not trying something different. The way I look at it (and the way most people see it), Z was the perfect sequel; it didn't try to do the same thing as its predecessor and improved on all the areas where its prequel fell short (i.e. the grandeur, the power levels, the fights, the production values, the overall visual design, etc.). When I first saw some of Dragon Ball 1 (many years after watching Z), I literally thought it had been made in the 70s. The technical advancement between the beginning of DB 1 and the later episodes and ESPECIALLY between DB and Z was just amazing. Toei was really stepping up their animation game quite rapidly, and with Z they were putting out some of their best work ever. It's a shame that they started diverting all of their most talented animators towards all those direct-to-video movies like DBZ: Broly by the time GT aired, which is still apparently an issue today with Super. Most of those movies aren't even considered canon, or so I've heard. It's a similar problem I've noticed in the game industry with developers like Intelligent Systems, who basically ruined Paper Mario 2 & 3 by diverting all of their talented sprite artists from the original Paper Mario to go and work on the 6th & 7th gen Fire Emblem & Advanced Wars games. What we got as a result was a couple of shitty-looking Paper Mario games that looked like Newgrounds animation. But I'm digressing by this point. I mostly wanted to say that just so I could reference a debate I made against the entertainment industry when I post a complaint against about Intelligent Systems later today.
