I really like a lot of the old videogame based cartoons, even the ones where I despise the games I still love the cartoons, like Super Mario World and The Legend of Zelda, and one of the main reasons for that is the fact that the cartoons were made to make the playable sprites become actual characters, where in the games they were nothing but graphics now they had personalities and their actions weren't limited to just being able to jump and/or shoot etc., they could talk and interact with other characters and be part of stories rather than just levels, so even if I didn't like the gameplay of the games I could absolutely enjoy the stories and characters of the cartoons, also they were usually made by different people and were at most based on the games rather than following them perfectly which also gave them a chance to be greater than the source material in terms of the characters' personalities and the stories they were part of.
As for the Mega Man cartoon specifically I really like it, it's silly fun and I really like the characters, it has a catchy intro (typical for the time, sadly intros for cartoons have pretty much sucked since the early 00s with very few exceptions since), I haven't watched it as much as some other classics as I sadly never saw it as a kid, but I've watched it in more recent years and I enjoyed it for what it was, had I seen it as a kid I would've loved it then too.

That opening is a huge tease. IT'S ALL LIES!
Frankly, the cartoon itself is ok. It's generally bad, but not effensively so; just a run of the mill Saturday cartoon. As far as video game adaptations go, this one is at least miles above Mortal Kombat and Donkey Kong.
The Mega Man X episode was pretty good, though.

By the way, the original Ruby Spears pitch for this cartoon was much closer to the game's art:
So you can all mark this one as a victim of executives not getting it.

First official videogame adaptation? What about the animated Pac Man series?

I agree with Cervantes, the animation intro makes it look like an awesome show. I had never seen an episode, so I have no idea how good or bad this series is. I've seen those trailers on my Knights Of The Zodiac DVDs, which by the way, I do not recommend because Saint Seiya simply has the worse English translation ever for a show, but this Mega Man TV show looks good on those trailers.

First official videogame adaptation? What about the animated Pac Man series? I guess Spirit Bomb meant the first official animation based on Mega Man (don't forget the Super Mario and Zelda shows were also before this one). That is still kind of wrong, though: there was a 3-part japanese OVA just before this one was released. It's closer to the game's art, but it was just an educational series of videos about japanese culture.

Is it that bad? For anyone who doesn't know, in Latin America (both in spanish speaking countries and Brazil) the spanish/portuguese dubs are legendary and cemented the show as the first huge anime success over here, even before Dragon Ball became famous. Nowadays I prefer Dragon Ball (and consider the original vastly better than Z), but Knights of the Zodiac still feels more nostalgic and personal. It really had a huge cultural impact through the mid-90s, every kid knew about it.

Yeah, that's what I meant, and I wasn't aware that there was any Mega Man animation produced prior to this show. Thanks for the correction. In regards to the show, I have very limited memory of it; I only saw less than half of one episode as a kid, and while I liked what I saw then, looking at the character designs now makes me cringe. "Americanizing" or "westernizing" the look of anime was a pretty common phenomenon back then when it came to localization, and sadly old Rockman clearly suffered the same fate, based on this show and also his design on the western boxart of many games; example: YUCK! This pic will always haunt my dreams... It's a damn shame because the art direction (especially character designs) of the Mega Man games has always been extremely well realized and lends itself marvelously to animation. As nice as the TV show's intro was animated, I still much prefer Mega Man 8's intro, which draws inspiration from the show's except has MUCH more faithful (and by that I mean better) character designs and music, despite having much less frames of animation. For those who haven't seen it: I still think Mega Man 8 was one of the best Mega Man games in terms of art direction. The visuals seem to be exactly as Inafune and his team originally envisioned it. I'm not giving the show a rating because I haven't seen nearly enough of it, but it seems like filler to me, with basic plots and such. Could be wrong.

It's worse. It literally sounds like Pokémon and we know that's not the vibe of the show at all. They say stupid things like "I'm going to kick your butt" and a bunch of stupid shit like that, it makes you want to punch them. They mutilated the whole story, removing absolutely all the important emotional stuff to make it for kids. The blood was removed, the dialogues were changed, no one dies, all the spiritual stuff, completely gone. The amazing emotional music, completely replaced. It's horrible beyond belief. For anyone who doesn't know, in Latin America (both in spanish speaking countries and Brazil) the spanish/portuguese dubs are legendary and cemented the show as the first huge anime success over here, even before Dragon Ball became famous. Yes indeed. The show is legendary. How far did you make it to? Some people said they only saw the 12 Houses, but not Asgard, Poseidon, or Hades. Asgard, Poseidon, and Hades are excellent. I would also say The Knights Of The Zodiac Counter Attack is the most artistic anime film ever created. However the English version Legend Of Crismson Youth is average at best. Honestly even the original Japanese voices don't have that gentle subtlety you would expect. I wonder if it is a language limitation. It seems that the romantic languages like Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and French can nail the inspirational divine feeling of the voices, but it probably gets lost in translation for other languages.

stratogustav - I've watched everything until the end of the Hades saga (the last thing I watched was the movie "Heaven Chapter: Overture", which happens right after Hades). 12 Houses and Hades are the high points of the series, but I agree that Asgard and Poseidon have some good stories and battles too. The series has a very strong greek/roman inspiration, so romanic speaking countries might have a greater cultural identity to it - I think the "inspirational divine" feel of the series, with Athena being almost a Virgin Mary-expy and the knights being pretty much protector saints, is somewhat reminiscent of catholic christianism (which is not as spread in the US as in romanic-speaking countries). The religious references are easier to get in romanic languages, I guess, and give a more serious and sacred tone to it.

The religious references are easier to get in romanic languages, I guess, and give a more serious and sacred tone to it. That is a very clever analysis, the series definitely has a sacred tone to it. You summarize very well some of the many important points that make it stand out among other things the show emphasizes like friendship, loyalty, fighting for a greater good, the ability of a mortal to achive divine status when striving for a purpose, reaching for cosmic harmony to achive a goal when everything looks impossible, fighting against all odds often in near death moments. All very important elements that also made other shows like Dragon Ball Z succeed later on. I have the original Bandai Namco action figure of Odin's Mime Of Benetnasch Eta. All musical fighters always called my attention for the mysticism behind their aura and abilities, like Poseidon's Sorrento Of Siren, and Hade's Orpheus Of Lyre. Asgard in general was very inspirational for me, major stars from northern constellation are well represented and the presence of Norse mythology its in harmony with the rest of the show. Just listen to that music, it is beyond spiritual:

I was browsing anime DVDs in a local store the other day and noticed this compilation DVD of episodes from this series: Even the boxart is a fucking scam! That cover drawing of protoman looks a million times cooler & more worthy to Mega Man than any still image from this lame series. The talented folks who drew these covers and the awesome intro were just con artists.

And I mean FUCKING EVERYTHING.Dragon Ball Z took the tokusatsu genre to new heights. The power levels rose. The animation quality rose. The art direction rose. Everything that's worth talking about was grander in Z. Z really was the superhero anime of the century. It doesn't matter if Dragon Ball I did some things better than Z because Z was bigger and bolder overall. That's strike two, Cervantes. One more strike against you and you're done for good.
