TV show discussion of the week: South Park

South Park is a disappointing show for me. While it isn't a depressing and derivative experience like watching Family Guy is, it's still just appealing to the lowest common denominator most of the time (degrading Michael Jackson, killing Justin Bieber, etc.). It's a shame because I think there are some episodes that are genuinely productive in their criticism of society, like Brittney's New Look and Something Walmart this Way Comes. I so wish all South Park episodes took this approach instead of bashing celebrities and being nasty just for the sake of it. But that would be expecting too much from any breed of insult comedy.

Even good episodes like Brittney's New Look are hurt by the hypocrisy of its creators; in the episode Matt & Trey criticize the media for attacking celebrities, even though they do the same thing for a living! So disappointing.

I never *got* it, and the show in general never made much success over here (I don't know any fan of it, unlike, let's say, shows like The Simpsons or Futurama). I watched a few episodes and thought they were average, with a few good jokes to make up for the MS Paint animation.

I would more honestly rate it as "so-so and overrated".

Ironically I consider it a very spiritual show because it presents the viewer face to face to many facets of their own ego within our current society, and that's a cleansing awakening that could help a lot of people.

Aside from personal beliefs or religious views, the Mormons behind the show are good at bringing people to encounter these blindspots they have, and that's a good thing because no one else are going to say these things to them.

When people recognize these things it automatically causes laughter, and that's just and indicator that it is working.

Of course the show isn't perfect, but it is better than many other similar shows at doing that.

Other similar shows suffer from political agendas and those agendas are what prevent those shows to be as effective.

The show also has quite popular RPGs of some sort since the N64 that have been well received, and are still fan favorites that people can easily pick up, and enjoy.
