This week we discuss enigmatic former KISS shredder Vinnie Vincent. He started with the band playing uncredited on the Creatures of the Night album (Ace was credited but was basically out of the band at that time). He would write some songs for Creatures and the most of the songs that would bring the band back to prominence, Lick It Up, the first album they did without the signature make up. Some would say its because of Vinnie that KISS was able to come back at all.
After a contract dispute, Vinnie would leave KISS and start up the Vinnie Vincent Invasion. The first album would feature former Journey singer Robert Fleischman and produced the song "Boyz Are Gonna Rock," with a video featuring Mark Slaughter lip syncing the vocals. The video also had a guy on fire in it, and that rules.
The second album, All Systems Go, now featuring Mark Slaughter as full time vocalist, would feature "Love Kills" which was also on the Freddy 4: The Dream Master soundtrack.
After this high point, the Invasion would break up, and in the 90's he would reunite as a songwriter for KISS' Revenge album, but contract disputes again would derail any working relationship with him and the band. In the mid 90's, he would virtually disappear, only to recently show up at a KISS convention in Atlanta.
Here is some more Vinnie Shredding, and instructional video showing solos from All Systems Go.
So, how sweet is Vinnie Vincent?

No offense to those who enjoy this kind of stuff, music is one of the most subjective things there is after all, but for me when shredding/guitar solos (or whatever they're called) happen, they instantly ruin the entire song for me.
Taking the videos as examples:
First one, Lick It Up, is a great song, I love it, but the guitar part is superfluous for me. If you were to remove it entirely or replace it something some other noise/instrument, it would make no difference to me. So, if he was responsible for the guitar play in that one, then all his work can easily be replaced or removed entirely and it would mean nothing negative to me at all. If he wrote the entire song, instrumental + lyrics, than good for him, it's a good song, job well done. But that's not what we're rating here, is it? We're rating how good he is a "shred guitarist" specifically, if I understood the thread topic correctly.
Boyz Are Gonna Rock is an okay song, nothing special, but the guitar solos, the one in the middle and the one near the ned ruined it for me completely, the first one lowered it from a 3-4/5 song to a 2/5 at best, the second solo forced me to stop playback and it's a 1/5, literally unlistenable to me, totally ruined, exclusively because of the guitar solo shredding.
Love Killz is not my type of music at all, I find all songs like that excruciatingly boring to listen to.
The last video was just really awful noise, I tried skipping forward several times to see if there was any music but I never heard any, it was like inverted ASMR, noise that doesn't make you relax and feel good, like baby Mario crying in Yoshi's Island or whenever Anita Sarkeesian speaks.
Final summation: Anita Sarkeesian and Vinnie Vincent are equals to me.
1/5

Although I don't play the guitar myself, I've got quite a few family members who do. I've watched and listened to them perfect the craft, and this guy...is average. He isn't a legend in the least, and his riffs aren't all that original or hard to replicate. I won't trash the guy, but he's not a legend like Randy Rhoads, Eric Clapton, or the immortal Jimi Hendrix.

I don't think guitar solos ever made me like a song less, but I do agree some solos are definitely a thousand times more meaningful than others. For example I don't think I could enjoy the song Estranged by Guns 'N Roses without the solos, as they grow into the song.
