I want to start a topic on Shenmue, because talking about Shenmue is something cool guys like us should be doing.
So Shenmue is pretty sweet guys.

I agree, the Kickstarted launch was so emotional at E3, no wonder it met the goal in a matter of hours.

I'll just say that Shenmue still has my favourite "realistic beat'em up" combat system ever. It's very, very deep, as it comes directly from the Virtua Fighter series, but it was adapted to let you fight multiple enemies. I mean, in the hands of a good player that has the patience to level up some of the coolest moves, the combat looks like this: I've posted this video many times, but it always do the trick! The closest game to this is, in my opinion, Sleeping Dogs, and it still doesn't come even close to be as deep as Shenmue. Not even close.

I bought the Japanese version since I'm rocking an import Dreamcast and I did this because a. both the console and game import are cheaper and b. I wanted to hear voiceovers that didn't feel half-assed. Love the open world and arcades but I have yet to really get into the game.

Yep, Shenmue is still one of my favorite games of all time. I remember watching the first cutscene of the original game and my jaw just dropping, I couldn't believe how good it looked. I backed the Kickstarter for Shenmue 3 as soon as possible and can't wait to have it in my PS4, hopefully Sega will release an HD collection of the first two games, they would make a ton of money for sure.

One of the things that really impresses me about Shenmue and Yu Suzuki is how well planned and thought out his vision of the series was. Not a lot changed between when it was still Virtua Fighter RPG and the final Shenmue games, other than the cutting of the train chapter between Kowloon and Guilin.

Shenmue was definitely very enjoyable, though both 1 and 2 had some frustrating points. This was one of those series I mostly watched a friend play, as he was very heavily into it. Yes, the english voices were pretty silly, but that was part of the charm at the time.
I agree that before Shenmue 3 comes out, it would make sense to re-release a Shenmue Collection. I don't know that Sega would make a ton of money, as Parker suggests, but I think they would make a reasonable profit, justifying the collection.
For those who like this style of game, I'd definitely recommend checking out the Yakuza series while waiting for Shenmue 3.

Not a lot changed between when it was still Virtua Fighter RPG and the final Shenmue games, other than the cutting of the train chapter between Kowloon and Guilin. Another cool thing: in the Saturn version video, you can see scenes that are in the last disc of Shenmue 2. So they were pretty far ahead when they restarted the project as a Dreamcast game - that's certainly the reason why the project was so expensive by the end. This also makes me think: the story was supposed to be shorter/quicker if the story from both Dreamcast games was to be told in a single Saturn one. When they changed platforms, they probably expanded the game. Here is a video comparing them:

Not only is the train chapter missing, but the whole second chapter (the boat from Yokosuka to Hong Kong) was reduced to a 4 or five panel comic strip. I'm not anyone really knows how far they got with the Saturn version. However, the Transition from Virtua Fighter RPG to Shenmue as we know it seems to have happened pretty late. Wait wait! Virtua Fighter RPG?!? Just how cool was this supposed to be? Not very much. Cue Virtua Quest footage: It doesn't look "Virtua Fightery" enough...

Virtua Quest was total trash. This was around the time Sega started going off the rails.
