In light of the newly patented N64 controller that could potentially bring us eventually a new N64 Classic announcement, I decided to compile a list in no particular order of the top 100 titles for the system + 7 more, based on popularity alone, without taking reception into account.
The original Nintendo 64 console only had 296 titles released in North America. So this list is about 36% of all the titles for the console. The ratio of title release to popularity was very high for the system.

Preferences really depends on what people like. For example some people may find titles like Person Of Lordly Caliber to be fantastic, but other people would not care for it because they may like different things.
Not even 300 title releases may be a surprise, but you have to consider publishers found cheaper to produce for the PS1. CDs were far cheaper than cartridges. It was also easier to put less optimized files on CD because of their larger memory capacity.
A 32 bit system may not had been as detailed when it comes to 3D rendering as an 64 bit console, and this is why many PS1 may need remakes as opposed of popular N64 titles that may only need a remaster; however this also meant less work for developers as well, and that made the PS1 more easy to develop for.
Square Enix lack of support also affected trust from many Japanese developers in the system, and this is why the N64 had a more Western vibe to it in many instances. In a way it is good news for collectors that may want every single title.
I have to mention, games like Castlevania 64 and Mega Man 64 actually sold well, but their poor reception did affect their popularity at the time, which is why they were not included here. When it comes to Legacy Of Darkeness, the damage was already done. Surprisingly there was not a Contra release for the system.
Many Japanese exclusive games like Bangai-O were a bummer not to have them ported to the West, but many felt the Western vibe of the system was going to affect sales for those kind of games.
