This week we are going to discuss Dragon Ball, the first show in the Dragon Ball franchise created by Akira Toriyama that premiered in 1986 in Japan. Suggested by Cervantes (ok not really, but I can tell that he's just itching to talk about it in depth) Does anyone here remember Dragon Ball? What do you think of the show as a whole? How does it compare to other shows in the Dragon Ball Franchise (Z, GT, Super)? Discuss.

Been a while since I watched the original Dragon Ball but getting through Super this year has me wanting to go back and do it. I really like DB, Z, Super, and the movies. Don't really remember GT(which most people don't even count).

I liked it back in the day, don't remember too much anymore but I remember after having watched all three series for the first time I ranked them with Dragon Ball GT as my favorite by far, then Dragon Ball, and last Dragon Ball Z which was okay in some rare parts but overall I didn't like it, it got stuck far too often and dragged on with things that shouldn't take more than a couple of frames of animation to literally last several episodes, it was pretty bad.
I still have never seen any of the movies despite owning several of them on DVD. I also haven't watched any of the new stuff, GT remains the newest I've seen of the series.

You know what really grinds my gears about og Dragonball? When Goku storms the Red Ribbon base, all his friends (Krillin, Yamcha, Roshi, etc) travel over there to help him but they don't even get there until Goku single-handedly demolishes the entire base. They really dropped the ball on that one, it might've been the best arc had they handled it differently..

I thought that was pretty cool, a boy with a stick, LOL! They had it coming. I found hilarious that part when Bulma puts a giant pearl on her vagina so she can take it with her. Talk about mature content.

There actually is an alternate version of the manga in existence where it's Vegeta that gets sent to Earth instead... And 'Kakarot' starts off as the bad guy... Good story!

Spirit Bomb - I certainly could've suggested it! It's among my favourite shows, though I don't like the sequels - Z, GT, Super - all that much. The original is certainly the best, as it has the right balance between the fighting and adventure, all in very good humor. The characters are just very lovable and the entire thing never takes itself too seriously, even having enough chance to parody other things (I remember fights against a Terminator and an Alien look-alikes). Here's a good analysis on its first season and general themes:

Crazy you don't like Z and Super. They are amazing. Although I do agree the first one is perhaps the best the first time you watch it before knowing what happens next, but Z and Super are not too far off.

I've been meaning to drop my personal synopsis on the Dragon Ball franchise for a long time now.
Now would be the right time since we're talking about some of the games and also because I watched a lot of Dragon Ball over the summer while my collar bone was healing. I couldn't game, I couldn't move around, and I had nothing but free time, so why not watch Dragon Ball? I figured
I watched a significant amount of the original Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z as a kid and loved both series, which is odd because I wasn't really crazy about anime at the time. Looking back at the first Dragon Ball series, it seems much more heavily inspired by the Saiyuki tale than the sequel series, or at least pays homage to it more, since I don't see as many similarities in any of the sequel series. I never personally owned any of the games (although I did play a few of them) and I didn't even know about GT until literally two or three years ago, which is a shame because after watching some of it I think it's actually a really interesting series, despite it's flaws. I would say the only people who loathe GT are the diehard fans of Z and the original series, but unfortunately for GT fans there are a lot of those people around. I'm not specifically a fan of GT, since I haven't seen nearly as much of it as its two prequel series, but I feel sorry for those people who are, since they don't have much support.
I certainly wouldn't rank GT above Z or the first series, because quite frankly I'm not sure how I would personally rank them. Z is probably my favorite with GT and Dragon Ball tied for second place, although I will have to watch GT some more. Again, I'm not a die-hard DB fan, I just like the world building, color palettes, imagination and lore of these three shows. It's extremely impressive in that regard.
Regarding Z, the only saga that has never interested me is the Buu saga. I would have preferred if King Cold and Mecha Feiza had been its own saga, and then was followed by the android saga, which would wrap-up the series. I never hear fans raving about the Buu saga so it seems like I'm not the only one.
The only Dragon Ball series that I can't stand is Super. It has an interesting premise like the earlier series but I hate all the downgrades/changes made to the animation and visual design. I hate the digital inking, I hate everything about how it looks. it's so ugly that it's unwatchable. Totally ruins the series for me. Not to mention it reuses so many visual designs & characters that it doesn't even feel like anything new by this point. Not sure why anybody would choose Super over the earlier series, but hey, that's just my opinion.

Up there on the list of shows I cant stand. Dragonball, naruto, and one piece. Yikes. Considering the immense popularity of those three shows, you must lead a difficult life then. Their merchandise is literally everywhere. Personally, I hate One Piece, I'm indifferent to Naruto, and I like the Dragon Ball franchise (most of it).

Plenty of things have happened to me that could have been bad. Almost getting into car accidents, run ins with death, only recently having car trouble but still being able to make it home, and other things where I lucked out while someone else probably did not. If anything I lead a charmed life. I have a friend who has told me that he cannot stand the final fantasy series. He thinks the whole series is overrated. Honestly, I am no fan of it either but I might still listen to the soundtrack.
