Been a while since I watched the original Dragon Ball but getting through Super this year has me wanting to go back and do it. I really like DB, Z, Super, and the movies. Don't really remember GT(which most people don't even count).Well, I'm a Dragon Ball fan and I count GT. The only people who don't count GT are the Akira Toriyama fanboys just because it didn't have his involvement. I'm not an Akira Toriyama fanboy, per se, but I am a Dragon Ball fan. GT does many things much better than Super, particularly the animation quality and the level of violence, which are both about on par with Z and LEAGUES above Super. One thing I especially like about GT is the environmental message I got from the Baby Saga, where it is revealed that the saiyans weren't native to planet Vegeta but rather invaded and conquered it after migrating from their home world, which proves that they aren't the simple gung-ho good guy human protagonist type trope that we get in nearly every sci-fi series set in space. That plot detail alone improved my entire outlook on the original Z series, which I felt suffered from the typical "space colonization propaganda" trope where the invading humans (in this case, the saiyans) are portrayed as the good guys who do no wrong. So yeah, GT is an underrated series with a lot of cool stuff in it and you can tell that Toei worked very hard on it despite no help from Toriyama, which I think is very commendable. It wasn't just a shameless cash grab. |

I am fine counting GT, it has some cool 80s arena metal hair styles, but it is the weakest for me.

Z and GT are the only DB series that have comic-book worthy visual design. The look of the original Dragon Ball is just too round, flat and expressionistic, even with all of the cross-hatching and such. I mean, it's a great series (I loved watching it as a kid), but it doesn't appeal to me that much as an adult. It definitely feels very primitive visually. I was shocked when I learned that it was made in the mid 80s because it always looked like something from the mid 70s to me even as a kid. The early design for Krillin makes me cringe  Like, WOW. It looks bad. Calvin and Hobbs had a more exciting visual design than this. I don't care if GT was a polarizing mess or a missed opportunity, or whatever else Toriyama fanboys claim. It's my second favorite series (after Z) just for the visual design alone. Maybe not as good as Z in that respect, but close enough for me. |
