Seriously, I went out to my local Gamestop a few weeks ago and bought the new official GC controllers Nintendo is making and it's exactly like the old GC controllers from the 6th gen. In other words, it's amazing.
Anyone who hasn't bought one of these yet needs to do themselves (and the gaming community) a favor by buying at least one, because you may never get another chance to buy a brand spanking new official Nintendo Gamecube controller.
It's the ONLY controller fit for competitive Melee play and still the best controller for the other Smash games, too.
I never thought I'd say this, but thank you, modern Nintendo. Thank you.
Shoutouts to @nintendoboy for informing us about it with his Spacevault page.

I've still got 3 original functional wired GC controllers, and 2 wavebirds kicking around, so I didn't see the point. That said, it is a favourite controller for many, so it was nice to see a new batch of them.
I'd still like to see the GC controller adapter compatible with more games on the Wii U. I've gone of the older Wiimote adapters for GC controllers, and I still quite like it for Mario Kart 8. That said, I understand the modding community has already adapted the 4-port Wii U USB adapter to use with the PC, so it can still get some use with more than a single game.

I'll have to get one of the new versions at some point. It's probably the most comfortable controller I've ever used-- it feels like its embracing my hands with tender loving care. If only that digital pad wasn't so small, it would be perfect.

@player1 Yeah, I find the D-pad to be a weak point on the Gamecube controller as well. I believe this is because, similar to the Xbox 360 d-pad, in that it is actually quite a large piece under the surface of the controller and the part your fingers are touching is pretty far away from the board. As such, it doesn't feel quite as precise, and as you point out, it is pretty small. I actually find it uncomfortable for GBA games on the the Game Boy Player. This is a neat attempt to update things from Hyperkin for the Wii U (http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/01/hyperkins_gamecube-inspired_procube_pad_is_now_up_for_pre-order). Some nice improvements: Better d-pad Both ZL and ZR buttons Clickable sticks Downsides: Apparently there are some pretty bad dead zones for the analog sticks. Hopefully fixed for the production model. Trigger buttons are digital, which is consistent with the pro controller, but I really like the feel of those analog triggers on the GC controller I would actually prefer both analog sticks resemble the left one. I was never a huge fan of the C stick's design. (Not a downside for me, but I assume Maestro could count being a wireless controller as a negative, big Smash fan that he is ) That said, I probably won't pick it up. As I mentioned above, I like my existing GC controller with a Wiimote adapter for Mario 8. I've also used it for a few other multiplayer games so we can have 4 players on my console. For example, on Super Mario 3D World friends and I might be using the Wii U Gamepad, the Wii u Pro controller, the Wii Pro controller connected to a Wiimote, and the GC controller connected to a Wiimote. The GC feels really awkward with that setup, since the controls weren't designed with those face buttons in mind.

@khador Whoa, why do you have so many Gamecube controllers? I can't imagine you need more than 2 of them (unless you regularly play with friends?). I now own 2 Gamecube controllers thanks to the new controllers Nintendo is making, and although I only use 1, it's good to have a spare that's in really good condition if you're into competitive Melee. Which reminds me, are your controllers in good condition? If so, then I would sell at least one of them on Craig's List or Ebay and let someone have it so it doesn't go to waste.

MeleeMonkGood question. I originally had a black Gamecube with 2 wired black controllers. Then I picked up a wavebird when they came out. Then about 5 years ago, when a roommate moved out, I inherited his indigo Gamecube with 2 wired indigo controllers, and another wavebird. All are in good condition, probably in part because I haven't destroyed them with years of competitive Melee I did sell off my black Gamecube last year, along with one of the controllers and my Game Boy Player and boot disc for a pretty decent price. At some point when I come across a box that is the right size for shipping, I'll probably sell off the indigo one as well, along with a controller. Since I don't have a Game Boy player anymore, there isn't really any reason to drag out my Cube, since I can play my Gamecube games with component cables or an HDMI adapter on my Wii. Also, one of my wavebirds is currently lent out to a friend, who has slowly been making her way through my copy of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance over the last year or so.

I currently have 1 Gamecube and 2 Wiis- which means I'll need 12 controllers total in order to be properly equipped. I think I have 5 or 6 wired and 2 Wavebirds at the moment.

I actually bought a brand new (what I believe to be) official Nintendo Gamecube controller from the CGR web store back in 2014. If there are any differences, I haven't noticed them since it's near identical to the original model. I don't play the Gamecube that much anyway and Melee has gotten far too overpriced for me to consider repurchasing not to mention I'm a little bored with the Smash series.
