Why couldn't they do a gba setup, or at least have more than 2 buttons?

Why couldn't they do a gba setup, or at least have more than 2 buttons? I have noticed that everyone has to bring back old technology in the order that it came out. That way, it can feel new all over again.
(Although, I don't know how you would do an overlay with shoulder buttons.) |
