This week I want to discuss the effects of bruxism (AKA tooth grinding) on the human body (my mouth looks similar to this) I wanted to discuss this disorder because I myself have suffered from it almost all my life, and it has had a disasterous effect on me as an adult, in many ways. Let me fill you in on the symptoms: -tension headaches (ranging from moderate to extreme in intensity) -sore teeth -receding jawline -crater-like indents on the teeth, particularly the molars -can create hairline fractures on teeth, eventually splitting it or crumbing it Sound fun? Spoiler: it's not. My bruxism is bad now, but it was so horrible during my senior year of high school that I not only missed a lot of school because my symptoms were so severe and were misdiagnosed as psychosis, but I also lost most of my lawline during only a six month period. The only preventative measure is wearing a retainer at night, adding another layer of complexity to my daily routine. It makes me so sad that my bruxism went misdiagnosed for most of my life, and by the time I realized I had it so much damage had already been done to me mentally & physically. Now I have the lawline of a 70 year old man at age 26, and it breaks my heart. Bruxism created so many problems in my life and I feel as though there should be a bruxism awareness day. It enrages me that none of the doctors I saw recognized my symtoms as the effect of bruxism. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.

Mate, that sucks. No dentist recognized it? I can see a psychiatrist not seeing that, but a dentist should figure a problem like that immediatelly.

That's the thing: I wasn't seeing a dentist during that time. I went from age 17 to 22 without seeing a dentist, but I saw numerous medical doctors, therapists and psychiatrists who all failed to recognize my symptoms as the result of bruxism. I feel like they failed me. I mean, bruxism is much more common than psychosis. I'm also disappointed that I didn't realize that I suffered from bruxism, either.

Why didn't you go to the dentist for 5 years??

Spirit Bomb - Have you gone to a dentist recently? Because maybe they can do some sort of restoration.

Thankfully it hasn't gotten to the point yet where they need restoration (my teeth aren't as bad as the picture I linked), but I need to wear my retainer at night or else I risk grinding them down further in my sleep. If I stop wearing my retainer it will eventually get to the point where I will have no teeth left and I would need to wear dentures.

So I was re-visiting a video about the element mercury from an old favorite Youtube channel when I heard them mention that silver tooth fillings are actually a mixture of mercury and a few other metals. Concerned, I did a quick google-search which confirmed to me that silver fillings do in fact contain mercury, and A LOT of it; around 50% mercury to be exact. This is a big problem for people with bruxism like myself because since having the fillings installed I have already further ground down my teeth, meaning that I have undoubtedly ingested a portion of mercury. My word of advice: if you're going to have tooth fillings and you care about your health, then do NOT get silver fillings. I can't believe dental clinics are allowed to use that shit. I unfortunately was not aware of this when I had my cavities filled and went with the cheapest option (silver). I hope I don't go the way of the mad hatter now that my body has absorbed all this mercury.

My best friend suffers from this, he even uses the retainer at night I believe, but his jaw, and teeth look fine. Maybe his case is not as severe, but he definitely feels uncomfortable about having to deal with all of that while he sleeps.
