This week I would like to ask: which film do you think has greater art direction and ambition, The Incredibles or Final Fantasy The Spirits Within?
VS
WHO DEFEATZ??
Discuss.

The Incredibles was very ambitious at the time. The director pushed hard for getting the hair technology up to his vision. Everyone else on the team wanted Valetta to use a hat to cover up her head to avoid animating her hair. Basically the opposite of what happened with Mario where they did cover it up to avoid animating his hair.

FF is way more ambitious, of course (so I gave it my vote), but it's a terrible, terrible movie compared to The Incredibles. And I don't even like The Incredibles all that much.

Yet Brad Bird threw in that cape joke as a way to escape criticism by not having to animate capes for the majority of the cast of supers. On top of that, you'd have to be crazy to think that The Incredibles has more realistic and detailed character models that Final Fantasy The Spirits Within. For that reason alone Spirits Within gets my vote. I could list other reasons, too, like the more serious and original story and such.

There is a reason for Mr. Incredible and his family not having capes, and that is what their trying to explain with that joke. I did think the joke was pretty funny, but as well of acting as a joke it also sets up a very important and clever ending. I’m not going to explain that ending, because it sounds like you haven’t even watched the film.

This is shown with all the other caped superheros, and the villain also has a cape himself. Final Fantasy failed, because it's not a good movie. The Incredibles was very ambitious and it became a hit, and in my opinion, the absolute best Disney produced movie ever made.

My wondering never ceases, it seems.

In what ways was The Incredibles ambitious? In a similar way that Spirits Within was ambitious now that I think about it. New CGI tech, bold visual setpieces not usually seen in CGI movies at the time, a shitload of money spent on a movie that had no guarantee of selling (Brad bird just came off of his most recent box office bomb, the movie was one of the first Disney movies to feature all humans, it had an unusual 60's aesthetic, etc). Also, this is one of the first CGI movies that managed to have faces deform and move in such a way that resembled 2d cartoons, not to mention all the improvement done with hair and cloth physics, fire/water effects, etc.
The thing is that the Incredibles is actually a good movie, that also seems to have had more of an impact on CGI movies as a whole.

The Incredibles is a good and classic film because anyone can watch and enjoy it. Age doesn't matter. That goes with quite a few Pixar films, like Toy Story. But this is one of their tops. The other one... not so much.
