This week I'd like to hear your thoughts on this trailer for Paprika:
I ask because it's one of my favorite anime trailers and I keep coming back to it year after year. Despite this, I haven't yet seen the film.
In particular though, I want to highlight a quote taken from film critic Manohla Dargis' review of the film that was featured in the trailer:
"Evidence that Japanese animators are reaching for the moon, while most of their American counterparts remain stuck in the kiddie sandbox"
Food for thought. Keep in mind that Paprika was released in 2006 and american animation has more or less remained unchanged.
Please discuss what you thought of the trailer.

Wouldn't it be better just to make a thread about trailers instead of making it so specific?

There's no reason to be discussing just the trailer: go watch the movie. It's awesome. I like to think of it as a "better Inception before Inception was even invented." Also, some scenes look like a great "Nights... into Dreams" adaptation.
By the way, the movies directed by Satoshi Kon are among the best animated features out there. The man was a genious. Here's a great video about it:

I don't know what you're on about Dan E. Kool , Melee is just trying to fire up some genuine discussion like he does with every thread. You don't honestly think he's still assblasted about an argument from 3 weeks ago do you?

Ah! I knew this title was familiar! I have this movie, and the lead actress is Megumi Hayashibara.
"Evidence that Japanese animators are reaching for the moon, while most of their American counterparts remain stuck in the kiddie sandbox"
That's because being ambitious doesn't always mean profitable, so Americans are more likely to half-cook things and make a quick buck than put too much effort into something that might bomb.

Here's a great video about it: It's a shame that Every Frame a Painting stopped making video essays. Nobody ever came close to making that good content on film. Yes, their content was really good. I've read the text they posted after stopping and, sadly, among other things, they were victims of the Youtube's copyright policy of shooting down videos and never asking questions: they explain how much trouble they went to go through creating videos that escaped Youtube's algorithms, and how that limited the kind of videos they could do while giving them too much work on edition. It's terrible because, as educational videos, their entire content was firmly under fair use according to the US laws, so they shouldn't have any trouble with it. Here's their postmortem, it's a good read.
