The environmental catastrophe I would like to discuss this week is the trans amazonian highway of the South American state of Brazil.
The 4,000 km highway has caused numerous environmental problems and remains one of the leading threats to the survival of amazon rainforest.
Known problems that the highway has caused:
-mass deforestation
-habitat fragmentation
-erosion
-increased human activity in and along the rainforest (AKA human encroachment), which negatively affects much flora and fauna
-some impermeable surface
-air pollution
-greater accessibility for logging companies and the cattle ranching industry
-roadkill, often rare or endangered species
What are your thoughts on this environmental disaster? Would you say this is a legitimate reason to be against the automobile industry? Can you think of any alternatives to this highway that would've been less of a calamity to nature?
