Nintendo going experimental in their games.

Nintendo is known for how experimental they had always been. Particularly when it comes to hardware.
Releasing a gamepad, releasing a joystick on a gamepad, releasing the rumble feature, making a handheld, making the PlayStation, making a 3D VR in the middle of the 90s, releasing motion controllers, releasing asymmetric gameplay, using dual screens, using non-glasses 3D effect, or making a full console more powerful than the PS3, Wii U, and 360 straight up portable.
However during the GameCube era they decided to do this with their software, and everyone wonders what hit them. For example:
1. Zelda was made into a cartoon on a boat simulator called Wind Waker
2. Luigi got his own IP, but it was a "horror"" game.
3. Mario got a weapon, a water weapon, but still a weapon.
4. They finally put Wario on consoles and they asked Treasure to do the job.
5. F-Zero was outsourced to Sega, to give to it a more arcade feel.
6. Smash decided to get a little bit technical, moving away from the party vibe it was created for.
7. Metroid was given to the people that made Turok to make it a first person shooter.
8. They continued the legacy of the discontinued Dreamcast with sequels and ports.
9. PS1 Classics were remade with the new expertise in 3D development such as the Resident Evil series, and Metal Gear Solid.
10. They sold Rare.
In terms of hardware the controller was very strange, and they decided to leave cartridges behind, even though they still adopted a format hard to pirate, but the software changes were really unusual as well.
Those are only a few examples I just brainstormed about. I'm sure there was more stuff, like having double character dynamics on Mario Kart, publishing a straight up horror game like Eternal Darkness, or playing Donkey Kong with real bongos.
The question remains what was Nintendo smoking, and why now they play it more safe.
The only other truly experimental games they have released lately are Breath Of The Wild, and Pokémon Go, which have been extremely successful, but other than those, everything goes as usual.
