I suppose I could narrow it down and say Dragon Force, not many games like that one.

I suppose I could narrow it down and say Dragon Force, not many games like that one. That reminds me: I bought Dragon Force 2 but still haven't played it. Also, I only played through one of the scenarios in DF1, so I still have to play with all the other characters and only then play DF2. That will be my resolution for this year: play through the DF games with all the characters (or at least a few of them!).

My recommendation for games without translation as I tested it just a few days ago: download the Google Translator app for your phone/tablet. You can take a picture of the screen, then it'll translate it. The translation is, well, balls, but you can at least pick a few keywords and understand the general idea.
I did this while playing Linkle Liver story, it was totally playable this way. The problem is that playing like this is really slow, but it's doable.

I actually had an opportunity to buy a Saturn last summer for only $30, but then I remembered that every game I want is out of my price range. When the average interesting game is 25-50 bucks, I'm better off not even trying.
Sega Saturn collecting is a beast tamed only by a privileged few.

licensedgames - It's hard to start a new Saturn collection nowadays, indeed. My own collection only exists because it started in 1997 (!!!), slowly building until now - and even then, I still have less than 100 games (I have between 80-90). But it's not impossible to get some great games for cheap nowadays, especially if you are willing to get the japanese versions of some of them. Almost every arcade game on the Saturn is playable and super cheap in its japanese version: Virtua Cop/Fighter, Virtual On, Daytona, Sega Rally etc. are all great. This also goes for some non-arcade games: Sonic Jam's JP version is in english and super cheap; some of them aren't in english but don't have any language barrier (Astal, Guardian Heroes, Shinobi Legions, Panzer Dragoon 1&2 etc.). I have the US versions of these (minus Shinobi), but, except for missing the story stuff, I think you won't have any dificulty playing them in japanese. The problem, of course, are the RPGs. Panzer Dragoon Saga is much, much cheaper in japanese, but it will be unplayable without knowing the language - or, even if it's playable, you'll miss a really well written story, so that would be a problem. Luckily, I got it when it still was around 100-150! Not cheap, but it's such a good game...

Thanks for the advice but having to do stuff like that makes games feel more like work and not fun. I tried a couple with translation guides and it just didn't work out for me.

Pimpjira - Then I think you should give emulation a chance. SSF, the best Saturn emulator around, is pretty easy to use, contrary to popular opinion. People still talk about Saturn emulation being a trouble because it used to require a pretty powerful computer compared to PS1/N64 emulation, but any computer nowadays should be capable enough. I know there are fan translations for the SF Scenarios, but sadly I don't think there is one for Dragon Force 2...

I've just wish shmups weren't the most expensive of them all (maybe JRPGs are more expensive on a second thought).

I do have a different computer since the last time I tried, I should give it another shot(plus updates may have improved things since then, I think it was about 3-4 years ago). Back when I did almost every game would be glitchy in some way or not start at all. Meanwhile most N64 and PS1 games could run fine with maybe a minor issue or two.

It could help on a few things. Thanks for the pro tip.

Cervantes Thanks for the Google Translate tip! Great idea. Just picked up Cyberdoll, and while I've been able to manage so far, having an idea of what I'm supposed to be doing will be a big help. As for favorite games, I love the Panzer Dragoon series, Sega Rally Championship and Crusader: No Remorse. If I HAD to choose one, it'd probably be Sega Rally but Saga would be a very close second.
