After watching the Retro Man Cave video on the Laser Disc Interactive, I learned about the poor performance of the capacitors from 1999-2007.
Since I didn't have much money during that period, I didn't buy anything new from that era until the Wii. I was strictly a retro guy then. So that begs the question: Have any of you had to fix a system from this era? I have some soldering skills, but I don't know if I'd really like to re-cap a board. Perhaps it isn't too hard, but it sure would take a lot of patience.

I've heard of this problem, and I dread it happening. Luckily the consoles from this era mostly aren't rare or expensive. Still sucks though.

The only console that didn't have any issues at the time was the N64. All the other consoles would usually end up dying on you, and you would end up buying it multiple times, like was the case of the PS2.
Maybe it was just an stragedy to sell more consoles, who knows, but it definitely worked. I think between me, and my brother, we have bought at least 6 PS2 consoles.
GameCube, PS2, Dreamcast, Xbox, PS1, and maybe the Saturn had some kind of issues like this in the long run, but N64s still run fine for the most part. I think it affected anything that played optical media.

It really does seem like the manufacturer made a decision that seemed wise at the time, but in the long run, the cost cutting measures led to catastrophic failures. Have you ever tried to recap your PS2 systems? I'm really interested in seeing if anyone has done it.

Have you ever tried to recap your PS2 systems? I'm really interested in seeing if anyone has done it. We never tried to repair them. Nowadays with YouTube we probably would have at least tried. The problem was that our PS2 libraries were huge. I think we actually end up collecting all Capcom, Konami, and SNK games. So not having a PS2 felt like a waste of money since we usually would buy games new at full price. Plus PS2s kept getting cheaper too, and that also helped.

San Andreas killed my Fat PS2. Slim one hasn't had any issues, but I haven't used it in a while.

I found this video to be a great guide for people who don't really know what this is about. The narrator also discusses other issues that cause older systems to break down in a way that is relatively easy to understand.
