The controversial second sequel to Dead Or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball and spin-off title of the Dead Or Alive fighting series will be released this month in Japan. Considering the publishers announced they won't develop a Western version of the game for U.S. in order to avoid the expected critique from the so called social justice warriors in the West, pre-orders of the imported copies are reaching at least the $175 tag, a price range unheard of since the age of the Super Nintendo. It is say people in U.S. should give up in hoping for a Western edition, but could this be just cleaver marketing for the Japanese imports or the culture difference can really cause this kind of soft censorship for the Western audiences? I would like to hear your thoughts on the issue and if this is something you may want to play, whether you are planning to get the import version of the game which is only on Japanese or wait to see if in a few months maybe Tecmo decides to confront the conservative aspects of the West and side themselves with liberty. Release trailer 1:Release trailer 2:Publisher: Tecmo (Koei) Developer: Tecmo Team Ninja Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita Release Date: March 24, 2016 (JP) Genre: Sports

From the outset, I never had any doubt that the whole controversy was fabricated to draw attention to the game and also save Tecmo the trouble of localising it. Yes, it is clever marketing! EA once hired a crowd to protest the release of Dante's Inferno, among other lame publicity stunts.

The thing is that if they don't end up localizing it at some point, then that's a miss opportunity because the controversy can make it sell tones. If they just sell the Japanese copies they can still do some money but nothing too significant. So I guess that to me will be the ultimate proof to see if it was truly staged, that they eventually release it in English. If they don't maybe they did chicken out for real and just didn't want to damage their name.

$175? Unheard of since the age of the SNES? What could've been THAT expensive?
There are plenty of misogynistic games out there, like the Duke Nukem series, which you saw in Anita Sarkeesian's supposed game collection (which is evidence that she's not actually a feminist, but a con artist).
But this DoAX3 just happens to draw some attention. I think it's a bit like the time South Park was getting death threats for supposedly having the Prophet Muhammad on screen. But they ACTUALLY DID it seasons before, in the super Best Friends episode. Yet, not a peep from the extremists back then. Hmmm....
So, is this all nothing but astro-turfing to make more money? You can lock it in, Eddie.

Because I grew up watching the MTV VMAs when I was a teenager I learned early on that most controversies were staged. They would go too out of their way to make something controversial so it became too obvious. That's why I don't discard that possibility. The same thing goes with the events regarding Hideo Kojima last year.
Back in the SNES era games were very expensive. I remember my mom paid $80 for a new copy of F-Zero. You have to realize those were early 90s $80, that's a lot of money for a game. My day 1 copy of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 was $100 more than that, just imagine, this was not a cheap hobby back then. When I think about it factoring in inflation, games are extremely cheap nowadays. Except for Tecmo stuff. All together I had paid way over $500 for Dead Or Alive 5 Last Round.
The same thing goes for consoles. The 3DO, the Neo-Geo AVS, etc. were all very expensive. A cartridge copy of The King Of Fighters '94 was running around $300. That was a lot of money in 1994.

The first two games on Xbox/360 were alright but not something I'd pay full price for. I won't be too heartbroken if I miss out on it.

Yeah I feel that I'm going to wait, and maybe not even get it at all if they don't release it in English. $170 is a lot of money for a game in which I won't understand the menus and dialogue. It is a shame because Dead Or Alive 5 has an amazing dub work.

Oh wow thanks for the link. For that price and the subtitles I probably will give it a try. I hope it comes with local multiplayer.

Sex sells...especially to 15-year old boys who lack the ability to discern between appearance and quality (i.e. the obvious target audience for these games). I would argue that, from a technical standpoint, even the mainline Dead or Alive series was very shallow until 5. Kind of like a really hot girl with no brains in her head.

LOL! I agree to an extend. But when I was 15 I wouldn't want this kind of game I would rather just watch porn. The more dumb down these games are the more attractive they are to me, and I'm 30. I'm sure there are many guys my age that like them too, married men, you name it. The more dorky, and ridiculous the better.
On the other hand if these games were made in a more serious way they will lose their touch, the Japanese culture behind it and humor that many of us are familiar with because of growing up with a somewhat level of exposure to anime, makes this possible.
But to an extend I can see that point not just with Xtreme 3 but with games in general, there is a stigma that adult people should not be playing video games period, that all games are for kids or teenagers. By looking at the average age of people that play games we know this is nonsense, and it is one of those taboo things in our society that simply don't have a sounding logic behind it.
My theory why people like Tetris, Solitaire, Candy Crush, Grand Theft Auto, Call Of Duty, Mortal Kombat, Mario, Pac-Man, etc. is because the way our brains have evolved. A good example I recommend for this is the movie Ex-Machina, the kind of intrigue that Caleb Smith's brain receives when facing authentic AI is the same kind of engagement you get from most people when playing games, even if the AI is in much less amounts.

@strato: I don't mind a game that features sexy women (ex. the last Tomb Raider for PS3/360). What I do mind is when so many female characters are scantily clad and prominently displayed for no logical reason AND the game sucks. That, to me, is an obvious attempt by game companies to make cash from people who have working eyes but not brains. I remember the first time playing DOA 2 (PS2) and thinking: "this looks great, but the actual fighting mechanics are...meh. Not impressed. Back to Virtua Fighter 4."

It is subjective, I had liked a lot of dumb games before, like the Rockstar games for example, it doesn't mean I don't have "brains". Games are meant to be fun, I understand how games can also be significant, I have talked about this before, but you can't always be so serious about stuff.
The same goes for movies, once in a while it's OK to watch a dumb movie and unwind, if you only watch serious movies all the time then it can get old, at least for me, the same goes for books, even music.
By the way game mechanics for DOA have improved a lot. DOA5LR mechanics can get pretty deep when you look into them further. It is a top fighter now. Even the sexyness aspect plays a role when it comes to frame data, and yes I mean strictly to the fighting alone.

Yeah, 5 is a major improvement as far as mechanics go. I had no problem buying that (I have Ultimate) since I feel that they gameplay itself is worth my money...and fighting games offer tons of replay value.

Yep, it seems like a very obviously fabricated controversy. I mean, we got recently games like Senran Kagura and Akiba's Trip and it was not a problem. Hell, we got the latest DOA 5 iteration recently and no one bats an eye. The thing is: DOA Xtreme always sold badly and got bad reviews, so that's certainly the reason. Do you mates think Tecmo-Koei would cancel a good seller just to avoid controversy? I doubt it.
