(I can't believe I haven't made this thread it!)
I've been meaning to ask, what are your New Year's resolutions for 2019?
My one resolution for this year is to cut my annual carbon emissions by at least half from here on-wards. In order to achieve this I'm going to purchase a 50cc moped, which I will drive exclusively whenever it's above freezing outside.

Good news everyone! I succeeded in carrying out my 2019 ambition of slashing my gross annual carbon emissions for this year by (roughly) half by driving my 50cc moped almost exclusively during the warm half of the year AND also by heating my 2 bedroom apartment with a 2,500 watt space heater instead of burning propane like I did all of last winter
Whoo! GO ME!
My 2020 New Year's resolution will be to save up for a Fiat 500cc or a Smart car as a replacement for my disgusting GMC Envoy.

To make up for your cutting back I am going to try and double, maybe even triple annual carbon emissions in 2020.

Technically he is polluting a lot more since his mo-ped doesn't have any pollution control stuff on it like a regular car, and the power plant that his space heater uses is probably coal.
BUT bravo on your dedication!

Are you stupid or something? A 50cc moped produces only 1/40th the carbon dioxide that a 2000cc truck does. Smaller engines produce less exhaust. That's why overpopulated developing countries like India where the vast majority of citizens get around on motorcycles & mopeds only produce annual greenhouse gas emissions that are a fraction of the USA's, despite having 5x (or more) the number of citizens. It's not rocket science....

Unless you haven't noticed that India and China who use your mo-peds pollute a lot more than other people.
Rather simple actually. Cars have had pollution controls and more tech on them since the 70s. Smaller engines don't. A current car is going to produce less than a 2 cycle weed wacker.
Keep on keepin' on, Cheeky.

Something mundane, like staying home watching a bunch of movies.

I want to go on a trip, somewhere nice, and cure me of this perpetual burnout. I saw a deal for the Solomon Islands on the TV, $999 for 5 days and 5 nights. Something like that.

In the article about mythbusting cars vs bikes it also says at the end..
Despite the MythBusters' findings, emissions are only part of the story of a vehicle's true greenness. According to the Motorcycle Industry Council, motorcycle manufacturing requires thousands fewer pounds of raw materials than automobiles. They require less fossil fuel, so they require less energy to pull that fossil fuel out of the ground. They use fewer chemicals and oils than cars. And motorcycles produced today are 90% cleaner in California than they were 30 years ago.
Sounds to me like bikes are still a quite a lot better choice overall for gas powered vehicles for a single person at the end of the day when used for regular type of traffic.
The usage is also an important factor. If you can have a bigger truck or something and only need to use it to get what you need maybe once a week vs a bike where you may have to do the same distance trip 5-7 times a week or more because you simply can't haul as much cargo, a truck may be far better than a bike.
I'm glad I don't have to make such choices myself, as I can walk or ride a bike just about everywhere with relative ease and there is also relatively good public transportation available, and this goes for pretty much all of Sweden, not just my general area.

scipioafricanus I wasn't using "faith". Just a basic understanding of mathematics and chemistry. Anyone who took a chemistry course in high school knows that the direct result of combustion is always carbon dioxide and water vapor. I use a 50cc during warm weather simply because public transportation isn't an option where I live. I was aware that mopeds aren't exactly the greenest way to get around, but considering that carbon monoxide isn't considered a significant greenhouse gas PLUS the fact that I live in a very rural, sparsely populated state, the effects of my moped's emissions are not felt on a local level. Even if it is true that the greenhouse gas emissions of mopeds are comparable to cars & trucks, I still remain confident that they are greener overall, since they require less gasoline and oil, two fossil fuels that require a lot of energy to extract and also produce sulfur dioxide, mercury and other serious pollutants when extracted. On top of THAT, Armored Core correctly pointed out that 4-wheel cars and trucks require exponentially more energy and materials to craft verses smaller CC motorcycles and mopeds. While I would always choose to take a bus or train over driving solo from place to place, mopeds are still greener than cars or trucks as a form of motorized transportation overall. And considering that the agriculture industry produces far more nitrous oxide than the transportation industry, that's YOUR fault, not mine, since I don't eat beef or dairy like you do. I suggest you stop touting the USA as being the leading expert in pollution control or sustainable lifestyles, because that nationalistic tripe you're spewing couldn't be more inaccurate.
