I thought I rewatched this the other day, but according to Letterboxd it was last summer. Man, time flies by exponentially with age it seems. Here's my review of it from that watch:
"eople say John Wick is so great because it is just straight action without a tacked on story. That is not why John Wick is great. Many action movies over the years have been like that, but not being nearly as good. What makes John Wick great is that it is straight up action without a tacked on story, that has the perfect execution. Execution is everything in this movie: action choreography, sound design, music, cinematography, acting etc are all top notch and executed perfectly. This is such a fun movie with a universe attached. It has been some years since I first saw it, I did not remember it having such a great cast and such a rich universe." 4.5/5
Anyone on this forum who appreciates a good action movie owe it to themselves to watch this. It really is one of the absolute best action series of the 2010's along with The Raid series. Not to stray off topic too much, but the sequel and the spiritual spin-off Atomic Blonde are both as good in my opinion. Extremely skilled actors and directors are what to thank for these films. Love 'em.

I love this movie. It reminds me of Doom in god mode. I like Keanu Reeves, but his work just prior to this was losing its touch. This really brought him back to the action roots he set in The Matrix. This movie is awesome!

This movie is awesome! Yeah it's weird. Keanu had established himself with some of the biggest action movies like The Matrix and Speed, but kind of struggled to find his identity for a while. Glad to see him cherry pick movies that serve him well now.

Now if only he could do a Bill & Ted mash up with the Matrix and John Wick.

This movie is awesome. The story is very elaborate and touching, a true epic: some Russian bastards kill Keanu's dog, steal his car, and then he shoots everyone in the face.
I think Keanu is at his best when he is playing stoic characters, and here he masters it. The action scenes have a very damn great choreography (it's really convincing how fast and brutal John Wick's tackles are, it shows that Keanu still knows how to fight since The Matrix trilogy) and, best of all, it's all filmed very clearly, avoiding cuts so we can see in detail how great the fights are.
The universe itself is also interesting, with killing organizations that have interesting sets of rules that are explored just enough through the movie, without losing focus to show its own mythology - the sequel elaborates more on this while also keeping its focus on the main story itself (we'll also discuss it in the future).
Also, the villains are played as just the right kind of jerkasses that anyone would want to punch in the face, so it gives a very good motivation for all the action.
All in all, one of the most satisfying surprises I've had with modern action movies (I only saw it last year, along with the sequel). Easily 5/5 to me. Schwarzenegger's presence would improve it, though, as it would've improved Schindler's List - but we already established that.

I haven't seen the second one yet. Is it a rehash of the first one? (Not that it would be bad.)

John Wick decides to get back into the business again, and does assignments until something happens, and he's out for revenge. The story again isn't that much, but the world building is even better. The first half is kind of underwhelming, but the last hour, oh man... It's takes the action to another level.

I was surprised to see the new one is nearly 3 hours. All I've heard are good things about it, I would like to see it but will probably wait until it's available to rent. I didn't see any of the others in the theater.

I went to see the last one on IMAX when it came out. It was fun. Nothing special, but fun nevertheless.

Typically, I don’t watch movies made past 1995 as a policy, but I broke that for John Wick and it’s sequels, and I’m glad I did. Keanu kicked maximum ass and did what I like my action hero’s to do, which is kill everyone. 5/5 for the whole series.
