The non-fiction book I would like to discuss with the pub this week is Rainforests by Lois Warburton.  It is a short, easy read that summarizes the most integral information about tropical & temperate rainforests, including the leading causes of their decline and solutions for how to avoid the destruction of rainforests. Has anyone else here read this book? Please discuss. |

This is the first book I would recommend to anyone who doesn't know much about rainforests. Being the most complex and important ecosystems on earth, it can be very difficult to sum up the key points on why they're so invaluable to our planet and what industries are responsible for their decline, but this book somehow manages to address every single point despite being on the shorter side (less than 100 pages from what I remember).
It's the perfect introduction to rainforests and I think everyone should take the time to read it. It was an eye-opening read for me personally, and I feel like it offers easy solutions to preventing deforestation that the all mainstream environmental films from Fern Gully to Avatar have failed to deliver.
Easily a 5/5 book. A must read.

When is the movie coming out? Hopefully David A. Prior gets the rights to do an adaptation of it filled with military dudes, mercenaries and Vietnam veterans. It could certainly use lots of explosions and a simpler story-line, wouldn't you agree? |

When is the movie coming out? Hopefully David A. Prior gets the rights to do an adaptation of it filled with military dudes, mercenaries and Vietnam veterans. It could certainly use lots of explosions and a simpler story-line, wouldn't you agree? The good guys (the Americans) win after blowing up the rainforest and the jungle natives that were previously never contacted by the modern world build a church and a McDonalds. |

If this book is so important and people need to read it, why isn't it available for free for all to read online? I can only find copies to purchase. I guess money matters just a taaaaaad bit more to ol' Lois than whatever's up with rainforests these days.

From the looks of the cover, it was very likely self published. Self published books are only made in limited quantities, like a dozen as opposed to maybe a few hundred copies from a normal publisher.

If they just use recycled items, they have no reason to plant more trees for their product; they just reuse what is already processed. If they don't recycle, then they better damn well plant more trees to keep their business intact.
Same reason that we will never run out of chickens or cows. Those are eaten/used by a LOT of people. Black Rhinos, tigers, etc... not so much.
