A friend of mine offered me his MVS. It's a Japanese Super Neo 29, a candy cab so named for the 29" screen. It's a sit-down machine, a real beauty. Unfortunately, I had to pass Constantly moving means I'm unsure what to do with an arcade machine if I gotta go in a hurry. Maybe one day...

Is it enough to have Neo Geo ports for other systems?

Is it enough to have Neo Geo ports for other systems? Nah. I'm looking for people who actually own the mystical system itself. I remember reading about the games and their ridiculous prices as a kid at FunCoLand, but I never saw one. Heck, the Neo Geo Pocket would be interesting to talk about too.

There was a time in which MVS cabinets were really popular where I live and you could play Samurai Shodown/KoF/Metal Slug in basically any place with food. Man, if I had the money to buy one of those when people started getting rid of them and selling for stupidly low prices...

Oh man those were the days. You can go anywhere and play The King Of Fighters, Metal Slug, Samurai Shodown, Blazing Star, Garou, Last Resort, Super Sidekicks, etc., it was great indeed.
Also machines like Killer Instinct, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Virtua Cop, The House Of The Dead, Time Crisis, Marvel Vs. Capcom, Capcom Vs. SNK, Street Fighter Alpha 3, X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes, Salamander 2, Virtua Striker, etc., were all extremely popular.

stratogustav - I remember seeing every one of those machines you mentioned (except for Virtua Cop, which I only ever played on my Saturn), they were really all the rage around here. But the Neo Geo was certainly the dominant arcade machine in my town through the 90s and the 2000s, with Samurai Shodown 2 and KoF 98 being the most common games. I still see some of them around in other cities, but I haven't seen one MVS cabinet where I live for a long time, which is sad considering how common they were.

Cervantes For KOF, both '98 and 2002 were probably the most popular. Not to mention Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, that one was a monster. Did you really never saw this cabinet? It was hard to miss because the void in which the screen was, made it very memorable. This was around the time Virtua Fighter and Tekken started getting popular too. There was also a Star Wars cabinet that was mind blowing futuristic and displayed 1:6 scale holograms of Star Wars characters like Princess Leia, Han Solo, Darth Vader, Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, R2-D2, Chewbacca, Lando, etc., in a similar way Microsoft Hololens are suppose to work today, but without glasses. I remember they used some kind of mirror trick to accomplish that, but as a kid it was really cool to see it. I wish I remember the name, it was so long ago. The last wave of popular arcade machines came with Dance Dance Revolution, and then the whole thing went down, I don't know how. My guess is they quitted when the Dreamcast quitted because they went away at the same time. Apparently in Japan the scene is still very strong, you can play games like Time Crisis 5, Raiden V, and BlazBlue Chronophantasma Extend, etc., pretty much anywhere you go. The Vewlix is in my opinion the modern version of the MVS. dschult3 The SNK game SNK vs. Capcom The Match Of The Millennium for the Neo Geo Pocket Color was probably one of the best games of its generation, it rated 10 out of 10 in most outlets, and inspired games like Capcom's Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix - Pocket Fighter to exist. Most publishers in Japan were competing by bringing the best talents and hiding them from each other to come up on top. As a consequence of this, we the players were the ones winning getting top quality games left and right.

I have only seen the Neo Geo Pocket Color online. It reminds me of the Wonderswan. The two systems look awesome, yet they are so allusive. I remember playing SNK vs. Capcom in the arcades. I honestly think SNK came out with the best fighters for the arcade scene. I remember playing Samurai Shodown and falling in love with the smooth controls. At the local arcade, I remember raving about it, and no one was playing it. Eventually it caught on, and the Neo Geo arcades became some of the most popular games to play. I always wondered if there was any difference in the smoothness of the controls on the AES, but I have yet to meet a single person who actually owns one.

dschult3 You are absolutely right, the MVS and probably the AES are the only systems that can handle these games smoothly. I haven't seen a single console, not even the PS4, that can do the same. Maybe because the emulated ports were not properly translated, not to mention the ridiculous amount of artwork behind these games is insane. No one can replicate that artwork today, it is too expensive and way too hard to do. The closest I've seen is Vanillaware, and even them are years behind because they can tackle the artwork close enough, but only by completely sacrificing the animation. Other than that, the most truthful representation of that artwork today has been done by SNK themselves with The King Of Fighters XIII, but it took them at least 15 months of Japanese working hours to accomplish that. Considering Symphony Of The Night budget was 35 millon back in the day, and Mega Man X3 was 22 million, I truly don't know how expensive was to do something like Metal Slug with that kind of detail and level of animation that actually spoke and made jokes by movement alone.

I found a Neo-Geo AES on the the Norwegian Craig's list site, and I'm wondering if I should pull the trigger? It's expensive of course, about 500 USD. It includes 1 arcade controller and 2 CIB games: Samurai Spirit and Art of Fighting 2. The seller said he also had a couple of additional games he might sell, but he hasn't specified what they are of their prices. What do you guys think?

If so, you may not get the chance to buy one again. Amazon has them starting at $450, but I think that is without any games. I have never seen one in the wild, so this may be your chance. Not many of us have the cash to throw down, though... If you do get it, I'd love to see you do some reviews.

And I love arcade games, if not why should I own an Atari 2600? I just saw Game Sack's review/overview of it, and it's tempting me. But first he got to respond to my email that was about details about the additional games. I'm hoping to get a bundle deal out of him.

Just got back from negotiating. He said he had several King of Fighter games (aren't they supposed to be pretty good?). He said he had some other stuff to, but he had to go and check (weird). For some reason he didn't specify any price, so I got to wait again. Damn... I'm so tempted, but I think I should try to negotiate a little more.

I haven't checked eBay for a while, but that's way more than it was a few years ago. If I were you, I'd look for a consolized MVS instead, assuming you don't have the space for a full cab. The games are way cheaper. In any case, they aren't that rare. You'll always find another one, so don't sweat it if you can't get a good deal.
