For me it was John Wick 3. I wasn't expecting so much action, but it was packed with excellent fighting all the way through.
Those choreographies were very impressive, and I'm sure it took them a good time to practice them.
I'm usually not a fan of Halle Berry as an actor, but here she did a fine job because she wasn't trying to act tough, she was just kicking ass instead.
Obviously Keanu Reeves is very charismatic as an actor, and automatically you know you are at least kind of going to like his movies, so anything he picks usually is not a waste of time, so it made easier to go see this one.
I was happy of the decision as soon as the fighting started. We really need more action movies in this generation, and it is nice to see some people are still trying to deliver that.

I think the second Harry Potter movie, I don't remember the year it came out but I'm pretty sure it was over 15 years ago now.

May I ask why did you decided to opt out from the big screens? Multiple reasons, really. For one it's mostly old people, families with little kids and possibly the odd couple on a date that go to cinemas here, everyone else either has tastes in movies that cinematic releases don't cover or has Netflix with a big HDTV and surround sound system with a big couch for that home cinema experience. Personally I don't find the usual kind of movies that have cinematic releases appealing so it just doesn't interest me. I don't enjoy the cinema experience, with the people, the many unpleasant smells (I especially can't stand the foul stank of popcorn) and the noises these people keep making, even for free I wouldn't wanna endure that these days even if there was a movie I actually wanted to see.

Some theaters are definitely better, and cleaner than others. I personally like the ones with the reclining chairs, with a lot space, where you can extend your feet all the way, and off the ground. We have a theater here that let's you do that, and still gives you the 750 inches screen Dolby Atmos experience. The downside is that the seats are so comfortable, that I can see how easy it can be for some people to fall asleep despite the ultra high resolution screen, and the immersive sound. You're definitely not alone in deciding not to go to the theater. Everytime I go to see a movie, I'm always able to find those good center seats, and I find the theaters always empty with just a handful of people. Although I usually don't go on premiers. I would imagine it is easy to get germs in the movie theater, but that goes with pretty much everything public related, like pumping gas, or getting on an airplane. The good thing is that they usually crank up the AC at the theater, so using a hoodie, or a hat is an easy thing to do. In terms of movie selection I can see your point. It is hard for good brainy sci-fi movies to come out. Netflix already has more than enough. All you have to do is type "Anon" for example, and a bunch of similar movies will show up. Mostly average, but still entertaining enough for a genre not often found in the big screen. However I've gotten used to the mainstream stuff by now, and I have learned to also enjoy it. I do admit it can definitely get tiresome after a while, but going every other week gives you enough time to refresh, and enjoy the next big screen experience. In a few years VR headsets will be so advanced, that I'm sure it would be hard to justify the real thing, but as of right now it can still be enjoyable unless you run into all those accumulated annoyances you are mentioning.

For me it wasn't that long ago actually. I went with some friends to watch Avengers endgame. I usually go to the movies every 2-3 months with my friends to watch such trash, it's a fun experience.

Since we're talking about movies we went to see recently, before John Wick 3, I also went to see Tolkien. I figured that if they were making a movie about the creator of Middle-Earth I was likely going to enjoy it. Specially me being a massive Blind Guardian fan.
I actually did not see an extra, or a trailer, I just saw the poster at the window, and I immediately knew I wanted to see the movie.
The image quality was excellent. They definitely did good camera work, which is important for a based on real life movie.
I liked the insertion of dragons, and other Tolkien related fantasy themed stuff. It was just the right amount, that it was almost unnoticeable, and didn't take a way from the real story feel.
I definitely enjoyed it all the way through, and I wouldn't mind having the physical copy either. It was well presented, and it showed the key parts of the life of Tolkien that made him into the icon he became later on as a writer.

That's a great summary. Tolkien's generation went through the craziest things.

Since we were talking about the whole AAA movie battle between Sega, and Nintendo. I went to see Detective Pikachu before Tolkien.
I was honestly expecting more engagement considering Ryan Reynolds was part of the cast, but to be honest I felt asleep most of the movie.
I can't just blame the comfortable seats, Pokémon has never been strong for me, so I didn't get excited even when they showed Charizard which is supposed to be my favorite Pokémon.
I like that the movie was around MewTwo. After all the first generation of Pokémon is the only one that matters, but Nintendo played it too safe, there was no risks in making this movie, everything was done fairly right, just like Marvel did with Into The Spider-Verse, and the result of that is a movie without excitement.

I forgot to talk about X-Men Dark Phoenix. For me in particular the whole X-Men saga feels like a high budget FX TV series, not particularly films. There is something about them that shouts TV not theater despite all the expensive CGI effects on them. This movie was very entertaining nevertheless, and I didn't regret seeing it.

I also went to see Toy Story 4. Now that's a Pixar quality movie, very fun all the way through. It has its emotional moments, and there is something there for everyone to grab or relate to. It is very good writing, and I particularly liked how they displayed the soundtrack without shame loud for you to notice how it is also part of the movie.

I went to see The Lion King remake, and to be honest it is easy on your eyes. The movie theater I go to is very clean, with very comfortable reclinable leather seats, and perfect screen calibration, so that helps a lot appreciate this kind of movie with high resolution, and high image quality.
Talking animals don't work as well in real life as with animation, animation is by far more adequate for these stories, and more artistic, but the realism here isn't so bad because the story is so powerful that it still comes through, and it makes the whole movie worth watching at the big screen.

Spider-Man Far From Home was also we'll made, a movie I did enjoy watching at the theater, definitely a solid 7, because it doesn't try too hard, it just delivers what it needs to deliver, and that kind of humility is what makes it likeable. It was a good way to end the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leaving the franchise without low, or high expectations.
