Guilion You mean like how good music stopped Sonic 06 from killing the entire franchise? As much bad press 06 has received, people still didn't think bad of the franchise until Sonic Boom came out because despite all the glitches 06 had, it is still a good game. However Sonic Boom was so terrible that people's attention started to shift towards the negative of every Sonic game, and it even made them remembered the glitches of 06 that were already left behind, specially after Colors and Generations, that were well received. Sonic Boom basically programmed people to dislike 3D Sonic games no matter how good they become. That said, Sonic is charming and it will keep selling games. It is one of the best game designs ever created, at some point it rivaled Mario, and it single handedly made the Genesis rival the super Nintendo and beat it in some places like Brazil. Those things alone have basically bought Sonic immortality.

Regarding stratogustav's question earlier about PS1-era RPG music, I don't want to get into an exhaustive review of all those examples, but I am playing Vagrant Story right now, and I will say the music is very atmospheric and appropriate. It compliments the things going on, and they're not afraid to back off or have no music if it is appropriate. Breath of the Wild had a bit of that same quality recently.

My problem with Breath Of The Wild is that yes, the soundtrack is great as always in a Zelda game, but they tease too much the general Zelda theme feel that you want, and they never fully give it to you. Like I get it, it is a long experience, and is better that way because otherwise it would get annoying, so it was most likely the best decision from Nintendo to not fully give it to you, but sometimes you just want a little hit, and they don't even give you that, instead they give this little piano thing, but it never turns into what they tease you all the time with, even when you the master sword. And yes, like I said, it is the most appropriate thing to do for the game, sometimes silence is the best music too, and it compliments the areas very well, but you never get enough of what they make you crave. Another question Imperial Khador, if you have to choose between Dark Cloud 2, and Xenosaga, which one would you prefer for music?

Probably Xenosaga, but only because I've never played the Dark Cloud games.

Probably Xenosaga, but only because I've never played the Dark Cloud games. Tough choice then. What is the better soundtrack, Chrono Cross or Xenosaga?

Much the same, I've not played Chrono Cross to completion. I very much like it's opening, 'Time's Scar', but I can't call much of the other songs to mind. Xenosaga's scores are pretty varied, and feature Yasunori Mitsuda and Yuki Kaijura, two of my favourite video game composers. Lots of good stuff in there, though I'm particularly fond of the music used for the series' various large-scale space battles.

I also noticed Monolith Soft went from Square to Namco to Nintendo. Xenosaga was already Namco, while Xenoblade is a Nintendo thing, but for Xenogears they were still part of Square. Apparently they helped in Breath Of The Wild as well, but it was all under the table. I was also going to ask between Rogue Galaxy, and Ni No Kuni, but I don't think many have played those.

Never played Rogue Galaxy. I remember enjoying Ni No Kuni's music, but none of it has stuck with me since I played it years ago.

Don't know why i didn't put that on the list. 94 and 02 are good but not as good as the rest imo. 01 is forgettable and 97, although my favourite game in the series, it's notorious for lacking music in levels.

They've got a few of them on sale on the Switch for $3.99. Which one should I get? I didn't see the sale, but honestly all The King Of Fighters are worth going through each of them chronologically. My favorites are '98, and 2002, specially the PS2 updates Ultimate Match, and Unlimited Match respectively, but all the others are also great. Sadly they don't have the amazing Unlimited Match on the PSN, but at least they have the excellent Ultimate Match. I would say KOF '94 to 2002 are all essential games, but I also like 2003, XI, Neowave, SNK Vs. Capcom, and NeoGeo Battle Coliseum. Atlus artsy heavy KOF XIII is my favorite, but XII is also a lot of fun, and there is nothing wrong with Maximum Impact, Maximum Impact 2 (2006), or Regulation A which was a great update to 2004.

As stratogustav stated all the kof games are great, But if I had to recommend one game to some one who isn't very familiar with the series, I would say 98 is your best shot. 98 is the most player friendly between the older much harder games with stiffer controls and the later games with the overwhelming amount of new characters and game variation and modes. And not to mention that 98 is the fan favourite and in the top 3 best games in the series with the great Orochi saga move list for the characters and some of the best backgrounds and soundtrack in the entire series and all fighting games in general. I say start with 98 and if you like it, try others in the series or fighters with in the SNK library. Some of my favourite games of all time. haven't gone a month for the past maybe 25 years where I haven't played a King of Fighters or SNK fighter. And i could almost say the same about Capcom fighters, to.
