Any thoughts on the new announcement?
I like playing on my TV, so I don't think I'll be getting one; however, I do see the appeal to better portability with the lower price point. I'm a tad bit jealous about the D-Pad, though. I wish they would just add it to a new generation of Joy Cons.

I have no interest in Switch to begin with as it completely lacks games that interest me. It's overly expensive for such very old and outdated tech and performance and it was of extremely poor design with it's flimsy detachable controllers etc., so while this may be better designed in that regard it still lacks games that interest me. Besides, I already have a Vita, which is virtually exactly like this new Switch except it has many games I like, so this new Switch is even less interesting to me than the regular version was.
My theory is that Nintendo specifically doesn't do things for me, they clearly systematically identify exactly what I personally wish for the very most, then spend massive amounts of research and development to find the optimal ways to make their products as absolutely infinitely far away from my wishes as physically possible. Switch is yet another in a long line of products they've proven this theory to be 100& scientifically accurate with beyond a hint of a shadow of a doubt.

I think it is a good time to launch a Switch Lite, with Pokemon Sword and Shield on the way. I do think this will appeal to folks who don't care about docked mode...
That said, while I think stripping out things like HD rumble is a good cost-saving measure for a basic unit, removing the ability to dock and play on the television entirely seems like a misstep. I have a few friends who have one Switch for the house, but would probably be happy to get a second or third so that each child in the home has one, but if only the original unit can use the dock, then it has less value. In Japan, Nintendo has been selling a version of the original Switch without a dock for just those kinds of situations. In fact, I know folks who wanted a second Switch for the house and either looked for someone selling a tablet-only on eBay, or bought a full second unit, and then re-sold the dock and joy-cons.

The Pro Controller does kick ass. I wonder if they are going to have a wireless option for streaming it to the TV in the future.
I love the portability of the Switch. I like how I can be playing a game on the TV and then pull it out of the dock to play portably for the myriad of reasons a Dad has to get out of the living room. I personally don't get this, but apparently Nintendo has done the research, and there are a lot more portable only gamers out there. Apparently most Switch users play in either mode half the time. ( Most Switch Users are Playing in both Docked and Portable Modelink) Of course, that survey only can speak about the people who are already Switch users, so perhaps they are trying to get the rest of the 3DS users to come over?
I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, and of course the internet hyperbole is out there already with people saying that this is asinine, and others are saying that it is a God send. It just isn't for me, so I'll hold out for the Pro model, or whatever they are going to call the next iteration.

Yeah, I mostly play on dock mode. If I didn't have a Switch I would still get the regular one.

I don't know if they would do it though. The Switch gets praised for its portability, so I'm sure people would be ready to criticize the lack of it.

I rarely play my Switch undocked, so I'm not interested. Definitely seems better for people that only care about portability though, the original was too bulky.

The fact that the controllers aren't detachable, and the lack of rumble (e.g. Ocarina of Time used the Rumble Pak to sense secrets), wouldn't that subtract usability with certain games?

You can still use detached joy-cons/pro controllers with it, so functionality for games that need those features are still possible...if awkward. It also doesn't have a kick-stand, so you'd need to prop it against something or have a third party stand when playing it in such a way (including same-screen multiplayer).

I also do not care to much for the switch. I don't like Pokemon nowadays since it's so different from what I remember and there are just so many Pokemon out there now that I can't keep up with them all. There's other reasons why but it's just not as much fun anymore for me. I honestly have started to like digimon more but when it comes to playing Pokemon games I stick to the older Pokemon games or play the ROM hacks. Pokemon resolute version being my favorite ROM hack so far. Don't really care for Mario that much or any of the other Nintendo ip's. I honestly prefer my vita even though its unsupported but has more games i'd want to play.
I hacked my vita and can now stream my gameplay and record it using my PC. It's a really versatile system being able to play ps1 and psp games on it plus other emulators for it either through the psp custom firmware on the vita or through the vita's emulators which are still being worked on. It makes it very fun to play. Also I can download porn on my vita by using the web browser.
I like older handhelds like the neogeo pocket color or ngpc, the wonderswan, the ds and the gba Sp. My daily driver is the gba sp nes edition with a backlit screen. Not a reshell either it's the real deal with the backlit screen in it. I got it for an excellent price. Also love the ds library and really like the wonderswan because it's cheap to collect for. The ngpc however I do like it I just the wish the games weren't so expensive for it but that systems games are worth the money.

Well, I was intrigued enough to pre-order one for my son for his birthday. I will update you all when we get it this week.

So, I got my son a turquoise Switch Lite. I had to fiddle around with it in order to create a kid's account and to transfer save files from his favorite games over, so I got to handle it a bit. It is very light when compared to the standard Switch. It feels really sturdy in the hands, and I actually feel like it conforms to the hands a bit better than the standard Switch. The D-Pad is pretty sweet, and I wish I had that one on my Joy Cons in the living room. The sticks and the buttons feel just fine. The screen looks great too, and I feel like it looks a bit better than mine. That could be from having the same resolution on a slightly smaller screen or from a 2 year aging process in the older one. I don't know, but it does look a bit better.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with my purchase, and my boy is ecstatic to have his own system for the first time in his life. He has been playing my systems (and scipioafricanus' Atari children's games with the kids controller) since the day he started gaming, and his pure happiness that I witnessed as he pulled out the box reminded me of the time I got my own NES around his age. I got a major case of the feels, so I buried it deep and played some Doom to repress the hippy dippy feel goods. (I'm kidding!) I got him the Lite though, because he seems to play in portable mode more than anything. I love to play on my TV. Perhaps it is a generational thing, or he just wants to play with some semblance of privacy/solitude, but this seems to be perfect for him. Now he has to find a carrying case of his choosing to spend some of that birthday Amazon cash he received.
Happy birthday, bud!
