Captain America And The Avengers for the SNES was definitely the hardest I ever played. Also I would add that it is unbeatable unless you have some kind of cheat code mode in place. The hardest game I finished was Gradius V for the PS2, also one of the best games of all time I have to say, and the best shmup, even better than Truxton in my opinion. I had to use the Konami cheat code and even with that I failed many times. Honorable mentions: - The Contra games in general - The NES Ninja Gaiden games - The NES Double Dragon games - The NES Mega Man games - The Soul games in general (including Bloodborne) - Castlevania Lament Of Innocence on @crazy mode

I don't know which is the hardest I've played, but the hardest I completed may be Ninja Gaiden 2. Pretty hard...

Metal Gear Solid 4 on Big Boss Extreme mode. I thought you were going to say Karateka on the 7800, but then I remembered something... No one played that game for more than 5 minutes.

Asking which game was the hardest makes for a hard question to begin with. One thing is that we often can't tell how hard a game can get if you don't know how deep it may go. For example, shmups with rank-based difficulty often encourage players to avoid performing very well so the game don't go nuts. The other reason is that many times the hardest games may not even have been good, so we don't necessarily remember them...

Besides, are we considering hard but balanced games or downright unfair/buggy games too? I mean, for a good game that is hard I should say either Ninja Gaiden Black on Hard or NG 2; or maybe I should mention a shmup like Layer Section (it is brutally dificult with the amount of credits given to you in the Saturn version). For an older one, I remember beating Batman (NES) being a very masochistic endeavor. Also, Ys: the Oath in Felghana in the hardest dificulty. For a single section/level, the hardest thing I remember was beating VR-18 in Metal Gear Rising: it took me two days playing this same short level over and over again, as you have to be absurdly precise with your positioning and parry timings.
For downright buggy/unfair games, then probably TMNT on NES. Fuck that game.

LOL! TMNT I forgot those NES ones were definitely up there.
You raise a good point because there are hard games that are just hard in a stupid way, and others that are very hard but extremely fair. Those that are always fair tend to be good games.
I also agree that difficulty does not necessarily make a good game. For example the Kirby games which are always extremely easy, they are yet very good games.

Possibly Ninja Gaiden 2/Sigma 2 on Master Ninja difficulty, but sometimes it becomes very cheap. One game that has done difficulty right is God Hand, the better you do the harder it becomes, so you're stuck in limbo.

Nope, though i gave up too early. Whats making the MN run very difficult is that the sigma version has 3 additional chapters where you play as females, they insanely difficult especially because their weapons are atrocious. Other than the rest of the game with Ryu was easy.

Hardest games I can think of that I beat are Batman for NES, Donkey Kong Country(it was hard for me, I suck at the barrel parts), several Castlevania and Mega Man games. Bloodborne will definitely on the list if I beat the DLC probably, main game was hard at first but not too bad once I learned what I was doing.

Platinum is almost as tough, it requires you to complete all co-op missions, on Ultimate Ninja difficulty, some of the missions can only be won through exploits and glitches, couple that with the terrible netcode and its near impossible.

Got damn, you got me exciting, I never tried going for it but it sounds like a nice challenge to get that Platinum, Sigma 1 as well, and then Razor's Edge for the trilogy.

The hardest game I've ever played would probably be either Metal Slug 3 or Battletoads (I suppose Ghost And Goblins & Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts deserve an honorable mention, too).
The hardest game I've ever beat, however, would have to be Adventure mode in Melee on the Very Hard setting without using any continues. It literally took me years to do that.
