By the way, Steam is doing a sale of the Metal Gear franchise and MGR is really cheap, if anyone still don't have the game and is curious about it. fsfsxii - Nah, the slowmo was in the KojiPro version, too (you can clearly see by the end of the trailer). For reference: Also, keep in mind Kojima said the game was cancelled because it just wasn't fun to play - so, while I'm also really curious about how it would've look like, maybe the game would just not be as good as the one Platinum made. But yeah, I would like to see Kojima trying his hand at a swordfighting game.pfft, he should've thrown MGSV's side ops in the garbage then, because those weren't fun.

Most side ops in Peace Walker were very creative, so I can't imagine why they thought rescuing the same dumb operatives and shooting the same bullet sponges over and over in V would be fun. I'll go with: "either they delivered a bunch of uncreative side ops or Konami would turn all of them into a Pachinko minigame".

I think part of it stems from Kojima's infatuation with western open world games, you know, the ones that have a bland open world and repetitive missions. Its weird because Sega has an open world game called Yakuza, and its one of the games that has done open world and side quests very well, perhaps its the only game that has done them well. Wonder why Kojima never took inspiration from that. Regardless, MGS was a better game when it was linear.

I don't know about the future of Kojima working on the West.
So far he is saying he is getting inspiration from The Division for his new project. I'm not sure how good that sounds.
I would suggest he stays in Japan and keeps his studio there instead of moving to L.A..
I know now he feels free from Konami. Working for Japanese companies is not a joke.
Back in the day most of the Capcom staff had to use pseudonyms on the credits because Capcom would not let them use their real names so no other companies can come and steal their talent.
I mean they were pulling some of the best Fighters in the world along with SNK.
I'm sure it was not just Capcom but others as well. All these Japanese companies had insane amounts of talent and didn't want to share it.
So without that kind of heavy pressure environment that forces excellence, who knows if people like Kojima may produce a different type of end product.

I was hoping for a Zone of the Enders spiritual successor from Kojima, so hearing that's a game inspired by The Division and Uncharted was a little disappointing. Maybe the game will look awesome though, I'll withhold any judgement until I atleast see it.

Hey! So I've been away for a while. I assume Cervantes already knows why there's no co-op in Anarchy Reigns (and TMNT), so I'll reveal it to everyone who wasn't following: a game that contains couch-coop can last longer, and can potentially cannibalize sales for other games, even inside the same franchise. It might seem stupid, but that's a strong reason even for the lack of bots that plague a few shooters.

Never heard of that theory. I would like if you further explain. The only game I can think of with the potential of that kind of repercution is Melee, but it wasn't. The successors came with multiplayer and sold well.

spidershinobi - Hey mate, welcome back! I actually assume the lack of coop is mostly to obligate people to buy more than one copy of the game (instead of four players sharing the same console, you have for people buying four consoles and four copies of the game) and to pay for the online services on the consoles.

The idea is simple. When you make a game with couch co-op or AI partners/rivals, it can last indefinitely. Think Konami's old TMNT games, for example. Now, pick that old TMNT game again and make it into an online multiplayer only modern game, and specifically for something like PSN; now picture Sony going bankrupt and PSN going down, that means the only way for players to play that game would be buying it again for another online service. That's the most basic part of the same-room multiplayer issue for publishers.
Now, pick Call of Duty: games can go obselete easily without AI partners, because the main mode of gameplay is the online multiplayer. That means you can release a new product while making the previous one obselete at the same time because of players' fear that they won't have enough people to play with in the previous product.
As for the Smash series, the protection going on in those is its own market characteristic.

This thread has me thinking about replaying Astral Chain, although I'd have to relearn how to play it. The game was a mixed bag for me, but I did enjoy it (except for the final boss.)
By the way, Star Fox Guard was fun.

Looking back, it's too bad that from those four projects one was cancelled (Scalebound), two were bad (TMNT and Star Fox), but luckily NieR Automata turned out to be one of the best action games from the last decade, rescuing both Platinum Games' reputation and NieR's chances as a viable series, besides turning Yoko Taro into a deservedly famous creator. After Astral Chain and the hd port of Wonderful 101 also being well received, it's safe to say that Platinum is in a much better state than four years ago, especially with them turning into an independent studio - so they don't have to work on licensed Activision games or deal with Nintendo's demands to incorporate certain features in their games.
