Very coincidentally, I replayed Metal Gear Solid this week and, to my surprise, this very in-depth video from Game Informer popped up:
There are long and very in-depth interviews with most of the cast and the director, and it gives a lot of perspective on both the series, the acting decisions, the fan reaction at the time and video game voice acting in general. Also, it's the first time I heard David Hayter talk more openly about MGS V, and I was sad to hear that, even though he is a huge fan of the series, he didn't even found will to play the latest games because it would just be hard for him. He even says he don't think he would work with Kojima again, as he thinks Kojima handled too poorly the MGS V situation (and also clarifies that Kojima tried to replace him before, even as back as in MGS3). Hayter was always one of the main forces behind the series, even doing everything he could to guarantee that the same voice actors would redo their voices for Twin Snakes, so it's sad to know that Kojima/Konami just ignored him for the last game. Anyway, it's still nice to know he remembers fondly his experiences recording the previous games, so it seems that he accepted his situation as something not uncommon on his line of work (as much as it sucks).

As much as i like kojima, i always despised his obsession with hollywood. As for Big Boss being silent in MGSV, i thought he was sort of dead inside and not very social because of the shrapnel in his head probably hit the central communication something in his brain, not a brain surgeon lol, but after reading the reasoning for that on the internet i realized i am a pure hearted person But really, it sucks for Hayter.

That whole situation was certainly handed poorly with Hayter. Although it might have been neat with Kurt Russell in MGS3.

That whole situation was certainly handed poorly with Hayter. Although it might have been neat with Kurt Russell in MGS3. I think it's pretty obvious Kojima wanted Kurt Russel from the beggining, with the character being called Snake and using the alias Pliskin in MGS 2. The thing is, even if Russel accepted from the very beggining, nothing guarantees that his voice work would be as good as his acting, as some good actors often prove to be bad voice actors. Anyway, I'm impressed with their stories about how amateur the whole recording process was, with them having to stop each time a car passed on the street. With a script as long as MGS has, one can only imagine how tiresome it must have been to record on that conditions. It also looks tiresome having to consult the producers in Tokyo every time they wanted to slightly change a line so it could sound better in spoken english.

I always find fascinating how Kojima used to say back in the PS1 age, and even in the NES age that at some point he wanted to make the transition from games into directing movies, he was talking about the far future at the time.
Now we are in the future, in the PS4 age, and his games are bigger than the biggest grossing films. So now he talks about how he will keep making games for the rest of his career. He beated his own dream.

Condensed summary of Hayter's portion for those who rather not sit through 60 mins plus of interview. I personally never knew he felt that way, and find it lamentable in addition to being candid - although I do find his sentiments empathizable enough. (They actually reflect some of my own feelings about Karnage these past few months...'a s a businessman I was not impressed...') Still, he owes one of his greatest (if not the greatest) acting roles of his life to the guy... So maybe the slight bitterness is tempered with some measure of gratitude & respect... hence the seemingly mature ambivalence. That's very good standing considering his name actually.
