After playing Capcom Vs SNK 2 EO on the Gamecube extensively, I realize now that the gamecube's D-pad was the last good Nintendo D-pad. First let's compare it to the Wii contoller's D-pad. The changes? for starters, it isn't textured, unlike the GC's, which hinders it's use for playing competitive fighting games like Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, because the moment your thumb gets sweaty during a heated match its going to slide all over the damn thing, making precise inputs impossible. Another thing about it that I don't like is how shallow and dinky it feels compared to the GC's. I can't quite put my finger on it, but something about it's design makes it feel noticebly different and "cheaper" compared to Nintendo's previous D-pads, which all had the same signature mark of old-school Nintendo quality. Is it just me? It can't just be me. And to add an additional observation, the official classic contollers use the same d-pad design as the default wiimote. So for fighting games you would really need an arcade stick to play them properly, which is a shame. Now let's compare the Wii U's D-pad. My problem? It's exactly the same as the Wii's D-pad! So all of the problems I had with the Wii's D-pad, the Wii U's D-pad inherited. And the pro controller uses the same design as well! It may still function ok for 2D platformers and other less-intensive games, but it doesn't cut it for certain genres like fighters. Lastly, let's cover the Switch's D-pad. Oh boy, did Nintendo fuck up here. How did they go wrong, you ask? By copying the Playstation controller's shitty D-pad. Just look: Who asked for this?? I know I sure as hell didn't. They went from having an above-average D-pad with the Wii & Wii U to a below average D-pad with the default Switch controller. I wouldn't even want to play 2D platformers with this thing. I noticed that the Switch Pro Controller's D-pad seems near identical to the Wii/Wii U's, but never having handled one myself, I can't comment on it. However, I noticed that it isn't textured like the pre-Wii Nintendo pads were, so I would say that, just like with the Wii and Wii U, it's objectively inferior to the classic Nintendo pads. Shame. In regard to their recent handhelds (the DS and 3DS), Nintendo has been carrying over the Wii's d-pad design to their handheld consoles ever since the GBA. I would know, since I own a 2DS and have used a DS Lite. This is a real shame for fighting game fans or anyone with sweaty thumbs. I guess this means that, since the DS came out before the Wii, that the DS was the originator of this inferior modern D-pad design by Nintendo. In conclusion, The Gamecube controller had an underrated D-pad which was crafted in the exact same style as the previous ones and the 7th gen marked the official end of top-quality D-pads by Nintendo.

I really despise how small the buttons are on the Joycons, and while the grip on them isn't too bad it could've been better. They did the same thing for the 3DSXL too, why make the thing bigger yet not increase the button size enough to be observable by the human eye? Anyway, thankfully there's alternatives. The pro controller gets the job done but that could've been better too. The gamecube controller had such a better grip on it, I don't know why they went backwards. I remember when stuff was getting leaked for the Switch pre-release and people were making their own concepts of what they thought it would be like and I came across this.
Yeah it's impractical, especially if there's a lot of games requiring their own controllers, but isn't the idea cool as shit?
Also, I didn't know you were getting into CvS2. How're you liking so far?

winnersdontusedrugs Sorry for the late reply my man. I spend most of my free time outside this time of year, and whenever I have been on the web lately I have been using it to tend to personal business and binge playing Counter Strike Source almost exclusively, so I have been neglecting this forum a lot, which I really kick myself over. As for Capcom Vs SNK 2 EO, I'll get straight to the point: It's great! I have regularly been playing it off and on since I bought it months ago, and I'm really getting in the "groove" of it (no pun intended/pun intended). I've noticed that the fighting system itself combines elements from both Capcom and (I assume) SNK's fighters, which surprised me since I was expecting it to incorporate Street Fighter's gameplay exclusively, so it was a nice touch for Capcom to (I assume) add King of Fighters (?) special move system in addition to offering the standard street fighter super move guage that I've seen in their fighters like Street Fighter 2, SF Alpha 3 and Marvel Vs Capcom 2. Now I say "I assume" in regards to my observations because I have yet to play a single SNK fighter, because outside of a small handful of them like Samurai Shodown 1 & 2 and Art of Fighting 3, none of them have ever interested me for one reason or another. With that said, even though I have never cared for any of SNK's character designs outside of the Samurai Shodown roster I have always been extremely impressed by the quality of the artwork in most of SNK's 90s fighting games, courtesy of master artist Shinkiro, who is clearly one of the best artists in the video game industry. His artwork is the reason I bought the game in the first place: As someone who worships refined character designs, his art is a dream come true for me. I could contemplate his beautiful artwork all day. His seamless blend of realism with a touch of style is very rare in anime, and I honestly doubt that SNK's fighting franchises would've taken off in the first place if he had never worked for them. However, this point leads me to some complaints I have about the GC port of the game. While Capcom vs SNK 2 is great fun, it has a number of jarring exclusions. Let me briefly list my annoyances with the game: -No art gallery??!? WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHY is there no art gallery when you have one of the SINGLE GREATEST ARTISTS IN ANIME WORKING ON YOUR GAME!? It makes no sense and ENRAGES me that the only way to admire his beautiful character portraits is by heading over to the Capcom or SNK wikis. Whoever decided not to include an art gallery for the game should have been fired. -No character specific ending ceremonies like in Street Fighter 2 and 3. Another glaring presentation-related issue, it really breaks my heart that Capcom wasn't willing to spend a little extra time and money to offer gamers illustrated ending slideshows for all the specific characters, like we got in Street Fighter 2 and 3: Those were totally awesome, featuring some nice artwork, and a great reward for beating the single player mode with all the different characters. -Some jarring roaster emissions, like no Remy?? WTF why would Capcom not put that parody of SNK in this game? It makes no sense. I would have loved to pit Remy against Iori and watch those two lanky emo-fags fight to the death. Would've made me laugh. So lame that he wasn't included. Oh well, at least Dan made it into the game. -The game's presentation on GC is a bit gimped; some frames of character animation were chopped out to compensate for the smaller disc storage space, but what really irks me is the aliasing, which looks unusually bad for some reason, making the character models seem rather jagged and painful to look at. Despite these letdowns, overall I really enjoy the game a lot and I would even go as far to say that I prefer it to other classic Capcom fighters like Street Fighter Alpha 3 simply for its greater variety and superior art direction. As far as Capcom's other titles in the Vs series, I'm not sure if it's better than MvsC 2, but CvSNK 2 easily ranks among the best for me personally, although I must admit there are many in this series that I haven't played yet, such as Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, Tekken X Street Fighter or Marvel Vs Capcom 1 or 3. Even if you're not a fan of SNK's character designs like I'm not, you still have all the classic Street Fighter characters to play as, and the gameplay is worthy of the legacy that Street Fighter 2 created, so I would say that everyone wins with Capcom Vs SNK 2.

I never realized how slow CvsSNK 2 is compared to Marvel vs Capcom 2 and earlier main-series Street Fighter games (I think they're playing on the default speed?). Still a great game though.

The Wii was the last good one. Although to be fair Nintendo never have had good ergonomics. The competition has always have better ones in terms of ergonomics, but in terms of responsiveness and effectiveness Nintendo has always reigned supreme until the Wii U when they loss they copyright advantage of their own patent. I never realized how slow CvsSNK 2 is compared to Marvel vs Capcom 2 and earlier main-series Street Fighter games (I think they're playing on the default speed?). Still a great game though. I love CVS 2, it is in my top 10 favorite fighting games, and one of the best games in the industry as well. I'm liking these finals, I'm glad the game is still getting the love it deserves in 2019. It would be really nice to get a 16:9 HD remaster like they did with MVC 2 for the PS3, that game still looks gorgeous. It would be nice to have it again too. It's cool to see they are playing the Dreamcast version for it. I love this artwork as well. It is also great for wallpaper decoration, this and the Castlevania artwork from Ayami Kojima, but currently I haven't been able to find any. I find it funny how Marco Rossi looks like Justin Hayward from The Moody Blues here.

It's slow in the sense that it takes a long time to win a game, but the gameplay itself is still relatively fast. I heard that time used to run out in tourney matches somewhat often back in the day.

Well in all fairness it has been ages since I played MvC 2 or Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo and I haven't played any of Capcom's post-CvSNK 2 fighters, but I remember MvC 2 looking & feeling like grease lightning by comparison, not that I'm complaining. Street Fighter 2 and 3 seem to move a bit quicker than CvSNK 2 as well, at least when I look at gameplay.

SF2 and MvC2 definitely play a lot faster. SF3 less so, but it is a bit faster.

You know, considering that CvSNK 2 has mechanics that the other Capcom Vs games lack (such as parries), I don't think slower gameplay speed is ultimately an issue since the number of inputs per second in CvSNK 2 is probably comparable to Capcom's other Vs fighters in the end as a result of the exclusive mechanics. Also, I think the reason that competitive gameplay of it seemed slow to me at first is simply by comparison to Capcom's two other Vs fighters series: Marvel Vs Capcom and Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, both of which are supposed to be faster because the rosters are composed of super heroes & super villains. Both Capcom Vs SNK and Street Fighter X Tekken are reasonably paced when you take that into consideration, although I am aware that the latter received a lot of complaints in regards to its gameplay from both Street Fighter and Tekken fans when it came out; not sure if that has to due with the speed or what.
