Are there any PC exclusive games you love but with multiplayer that has since been shut down and you never got to try it? As I recently have gotten back into the decade-old FPS classics Counter Strike Source and HL2 Deathmatch, I've been looking for other older games that will run on my rinky-dink laptop, but I've noticed that a number of titles, some very highly regarded, no longer have online support for their multiplayer, with no fan-workarounds, either, which inspired me to make this thread. (NOTE: This thread is ONLY about games that do NOT currently have fan patches/workarounds for online support.) I can think of a few off the top of my head: -Far Cry. I've heard that the multiplayer was arguably even better than the single player mode, but the servers have since been shut down and sadly unlike crysis there doesn't seem to be any workaround for it. Plus, like a lot of open-world FPS it doesn't feature bots, so there's no way for me to experience it. -Devastation. The gameplay and audio design remind me a lot of Counter Strike, another tactical multiplayer FPS, and since it featured a robust, ambitious physics system along with some of the best interactivity of any FPS at the time I am extremely interested in playing both the single and mutiplayer modes, but I've heard that the online servers have long been dead and there doesn't seem to be any workaround. The game is also not available digitally and will not run on Windows 10, another huge drawback for the game in general. What a bummer. -B.R.E.E.D. This is another obscure older PC exclusive FPS that I've been wanting to play for a while now but haven't yet. I've heard that it has online support for its multiplayer, but I would be baffled if the servers were still up or if there are any workarounds if they aren't anymore, given its obscurity. -Chrome. Another ambitious early 2000s PC exclusive FPS that is said to have many similarities to Far Cry, being an open ended shooter with a physics engine, which is why I'm extremely interested in playing it, since I'm a big fan of Far Cry. However I've noticed that there are no workarounds for its defunct multiplayer, which is a pity. (EDIT: did some research and it seems that the online servers are in fact still up, which is baffling considering that it was a 2003 game. I have my doubts if this is true...) - Star Wars Battlefront 2004. One of my all time favorite Star Wars games and easily my favorite Star Wars Battlefront game, the first Star Wars Battlefront for PC from 2004 tragically does not have fan servers up as of this post. The official Game Spy servers it used were shut down years ago with the demise of Game Spy. Someone needs to do something about this! The PC version is the only version of the game that supports 64 player multiplayer, and since it was recently released digitally on PC for the first time ever there's all the more reason for unofficial servers for it to be set up.

Not that I know of. For the most part in PC if you have friends you can play with, you usually can make it happen.

Interesting topic, Spirit Bomb! I don't know any examples because I rarely ever play online modes (all my multiplayer gaming is on local splitscreen). One thing I can say, though: some games have their online modes intact but are effectively dead because they don't have any players. I remember briefly trying online multiplayer in Binary Domain, Tomb Raider 2013 and Dungeons and Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara and, except for a brief visit from another player in D&D, those games were all but dead online.

There are some trophies I wanted to get on Tomb Raider 2013, but it is impossible if no one is there. It seems the servers are fine though.

Brings up a problem with getting trophies and achievements for games that require online play, but are thus impossible to get now.

I remember briefly trying online multiplayer in Binary Domain, Tomb Raider 2013 and Dungeons and Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara and, except for a brief visit from another player in D&D, those games were all but dead online. The reason I thought of this is because I had previously been forced to use fan servers for one of my favorite PC games, Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds, because the official servers had already been shut down by the time I bought my copy. It's a shame that not every game has its own fan servers like the one I mentioned does. In regards to your post, I would rather have ghost-town servers than pulled servers. Historically one of the biggest offenders of shutting down online servers has been EA; one example would be Goldeneye Rogue Agent, which had online support for less than two years before EA pulled it. The back of the box it even warns that EA "has the right" to discontinue online support within ten days of release if the game flops commercially. I always appreciate it when developers keep servers up for their games, no matter how old the games are and regardless of how many people actually play on them.

If you got a game in mind, search the interwebs for clans. Clans are groups of people who share a common interest in a game. They may also be called Teams or Guilds. They're pretty common, even with MMos that aren't new, like Guild Wars.
Try Reddit.
I know of two:
There is TAUniverse.com, where there are people who not only play but also MOD Total Annihilation, coding and modelling completely new war units without modifying existent ones. There are hundreds of these custom units on their database.
FAF: after Gas Powered Game went defunct, they created Forged Alliance Forever, to continue support for Supreme Commander.

Battlefield 1942. Something I always wanted to play online because apparently from what I heard is that the servers are still up on it. I have the disc and the disc drive to play it so we'll see if i can get it working on windows 10 on modern hardware. It looks so dang cool too.

It was on the "games you want to play that aren't available digitally" thread if I'm remembering correctly. I agree with you that the first Battlefield deserves to have servers remain active, considering its legacy.

Hey, thanks for the tip, my man! I'll keep this in mind for sure.

I just want to add something regarding Battlefield-style games: I've noticed that it's not uncommon for large-scale online games like Battlefield 1942, Frontlines Fuel of War, and Far Cry to not have any unofficial fan servers after the publishers discontinue online support for them. I'm guessing this is because it would cost much more money for fans to maintain large enough servers for them compared to other, smaller-scale shooters like Halo PC, which only allows a maximum of 16 players and does have fan servers active as of this moment. And other non-shooters that have small-scale multiplayer modes like the Age of Empires games do have fan servers active right now for just about all of the titles. This is a shame because some of the most impressive FPS of all time happen to be Battlefield-style or team-based massively online shooters; MAG for the PS3 is a good example, a game that was very quickly taken offline after just a couple of years because the developer went bankrupt.

I played Battlefield 1942. It is basically PUBG, but 10 years ago. MAG was popular too, but I never really like them. I would rather play Time Crisis Razing Storm any day.

I don't see how a strategic team-based shooter like Battlefield could be compared to a Battle Royale game. I've heard that Battlefield 1942 does include standard deathmatch & team deathmatch modes found in most FPS, but this is still very different than the last-man-standing nature of battle royale shooters like PUBG, where you only get one life per match.
