Gladiator, it's a good movie, but I think it's very much overrated. People talk about this movie like it's the best movie ever made. Here's my review for the movie when I watched last year:
"Ridley Scott is an amazing director and I respect him very much. He is remarkable in that most of the things he does is practical effects. No fake-ass The Walking Dead tigers here, this is the real deal. What I think is a shame with Scott is that the movies he directs often have very boring writing. The Martian, Prometheus, Alien: Covenant, Kingdom of Heaven and now Gladiator. There is nothing really interesting that sets it apart in the writing aspect. Good acting, great directing and fantastic production design yes. But when the story is so predictable, I am only looking forward to the battles. Another movie crossed off the list." 3.5/5

I had a teacher that looked exactly like Russel Crowe. He actually sold me his Honda Civic back in the day for $300, and gave me his bench for weight lifting, for free, because he was moving out.
I really like all these movies, the epics are always great, Troy, is another one, with Eric Bana, and Kingdom Of Heaven with Orlando Bloom.

I liked it at the time, but even then I thought it was not as great as other epics - like Braveheart, which we were just discussing. As Balder said, I guess the writing is its main flaw. I would give it a 3/5. The arena scenes were pretty cool, thought. stratogustav - You just reminded me that I haven't watched Kingdom of Heaven yet.

I like this movie a lot. Balder, I think I understand what you are saying about the dialog after all these years of watching it. I always catch myself jumping to the action scenes just for the sheer pleasure of it. Of course, there are some good dialog scenes placed in the movie every now and again. I still absolutely love this scene:
(Maximus just talked shit to The Joker!)
And of course, who could ever forget the ending scene? (Spoilers below)
Ever since I have become a father, I always sympathize with Maximus even more so now than when I first watched this film. I would use every last ounce of blood, sweat, and tears to get my revenge: in this life or the next.
I believe the following dialog may (Obviously others can sympathize more than some. Please don't think I am lumping everyone together here. ) be more powerful to a viewer when you or someone you know has served their country honorably:
"He was a soldier of Rome! Honor him." "Who will help me carry him?"
<Everyone does and leaves that rat bastard to rot.>
I carried my grandfather's casket along others for a military funeral. He served during the Korean War. It was one of the greatest honors I have ever beheld. I will do it again for my friends if they go first, and I know they will carry me when it is my time. Until Valhalla, my friend.
By the way, can you tell that some asshole always starts cutting onions every time I see this scene? That jerk needs to stop it!

Kingdom of Heaven is very much like this movie though. Beautiful to watch, but the story is very bland. I feel the exact same opposite with both movies. I feel they lack style, but the meaning behind the stories is solid. Specially for Kingdom Of Heaven. It seems you never put attention to meanings, you focus too much on stylistic narrative, I feel meaning is the most important part of a story. Hence I know a movie like Click is great, but the Big Lebowski sucks.

I think the reason why people loved this film and others like it (Braveheart, 300, etc...) is because we all would love to have leaders of which we could relate to. We want commanders who understand the little guy and who would get on the front lines with us, no matter what the danger. I had some of those Commanding Officers while I was in the Marine Corps, and, even though I have been out for years now, I would join them again if they asked me, just like the Grand Armee did with Napoleon in 1815 when they knew all they were holding on to was a fading glimmer of hope.
Leadership is spoiled with the rotten corpse of what once was its true definition, and I believe it has soured many people. These movies give people hope.
