The Cobretti To-Watch Super Mega Ultra List AKA Balder's Recommendations of Weird & Awesome Accessible Curiosities. Since cobretti has made me watch 50 movies that he deems important, I'll counter that by giving him 10 really cool movies that are easily accessible for everyone to watch. cobretti should watch these, but I think everyone should check some of them out if they interest them. I've put some effort into the order of the movies, so if you want to watch them I suggest you start from the top, however you're free to watch them in any order you'd like. The films get weirder as the the list progresses, so the final film is definitely an acquired taste which I'm sure most people will never acquire. Think of it as the endgame boss. I've watched all of these, and I think they're pretty cool. The public may not think all of these are great, but I do think most people would see these movies as an experience.
This is basically the anti-Balder To-Watch Mega List as this include very deep movies that may or may not be entertaining, whereas the list cobretti made has many very entertaining but mostly mindless action movies. None of the lists are better than the other, they are simply different. Come on in and join this cinematic journey.
We start of with a very interesting short film called the candidate. It features a white collar cubicle worker who is tired of the people around him, and at work he is met by a weird stranger who represents an interesting organization which changes everything. This short has great visuals, and even though it might play on gullible people, I still think it is executed extremely well. Fun for everyone.
The first documentary of this list. It features the Grizzly Man himself. This guy is either crazy or is brave as fuck, or maybe a combination of the two. This guy lives out in the wild and hangs around with grizzly bears. He has no weapons to defend himself and he just likes to hang out with bears and film them. The footage here is unbelievable. It is such a curiosity within documentaries. Fun for everyone.
My personal favorite short film of all time. It came out last year and was nominated for Best Live-Action Short Film but lost for some ungodly reason (The Academy suck!). It is about two young boys who have dares with each other with greater and greater risks. That is all I will say for now. The ending hits me like a ton of bricks. One of the most powerful movies ever made.
From the newest movie to the oldest, here is Battleship Potemkin. You have probably heard about this one. A little bit of Communistic propaganda will serve you Americans greatly. Anyways, aside from the political stuff, this is one of the best movies ever made. It basically showed everyone how to edit a movie. It feels very modern even though it is from 1925 due to its excellent pacing and cutting. The step scene is such a powerful scene, a must-watch for everyone interested in film history.
The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)
My favorite silent movie ever. You might think these silent movies are outdated as fuck, but watch this movie and admit it rules. The actor performs so well here even though she has no voice to be head. Excellent through and through, powerful as hell.
Now this is a hard movie to watch. It is the other documentary in this list, and it covers a society in Iran where everyone who lives there has leprosy. It is morbidly interesting to watch these people continue to live even though their lives are in a way really fucked up. This is not only important to cinema history, but to history in itself. So incredibly unique footage.
Okay now we are delving into the weird and abstract. This is Japanese movie about a guy who takes a janitor job at a mental institution to try to get his wife out of there because their daughter is to marry a rich guy, and at this time it was believed that mental problems were hereditary. So to not let the husband of his daughter know that his mother-in-law is mentally insane, he has to get her out. This has so many cool visuals, and the ending is pretty weird and abstract, but in a cool way.
There is nothing wrong with the video. This is actually a slideshow movie, but it is very powerful. This is the movie that inspired Twelve Monkeys, or rather Twelve Monkeys is a remake/re-imagining of this. It is very important to cinema history.
Okay, now we are officially very weird. This short film is more a tech-demo than anything else. But it is so mesmerizing to watch. Its visuals are haunting, a visual blast, not to be watched by photo-sensitive people. Fantastic.
Now we are at the endgame boss of this list. The most weird, the most abstract and perhaps the most beautiful if you ask me. Many people would say that nothing happens in this movie, and in a way they would be correct. Visually mesmerizing. It is the Jackson Pollock of the movie world. People either hate it or love it, there is no in-between. Watch this last because if you could watch the other ones, you might find the patience to watch this.

Balder - The best silent movie is called Metropolis (look for the restored version) and any other option is wrong. I like how Grizzly Man is one of those stories (Into the Wild is another one) in which a very stupid dude with no survival knowledge thinks he can live in harmony with nature like he was a Disney princess or something, and then nature promptly shows who's the boss. By the way, thanks for including links! I've rewatched 12 Monkeys recently and wanted to see La Jetée.

I still haven't watched Into the Wild but I own it on BD and it's one of those movies I should watch soon. Even though Grizzly Man is super naive, I still respect him and think he is awesome. A big part of making a list like this is that all the movies should be available to watch for everyone without having to resort to piracy or buying/renting them. La Jetee is not as entertaining as Twelve Monkeys, but it's a very cool film, and I think it enhances the experiences of both films if watch them both. Be sure to come back here with your opinions and scores if you watch any of them. And don't worry about hurting my feelings with bad scores, I have the feeling not all of these will be well regarded, hehe.

I don't remember the footage in Grizzly Man being unbelievable. The film was more about the narration and backstory of the film maker than the environment itself. It was an interesting film for certain reasons but if you're looking for breathtaking landscapes or exceptional animal footage then you're going to be disappointed. I'm not sure why you decided to watch Grizzly Man, but have you seen many nature documentaries Balder? Regardless, trying to get Cobretti stoked about anything animal/nature-related is a pointless endeavor. Remember when I made that thread about Steve Irwin and he denounced the guy for never having body-slammed Andre the Giant?

Remember when I made that thread about Steve Irwin and he denounced the guy for never having body-slammed Andre the Giant? Dude, you're completely missing the point of Grizzly Man. It's not about landscapes or anything like that. It's about a guy filming up close to grizzlies in their natural habitat. And this is no camera laying around with a film crew hiding in safety or having super long lenses. No this is about a guy with a camcorder going up close and personal to killing machines. I've seen a couple of the big nature documentaries like Frozen Planet and some of the other Planet Earth spin-offs, and they are breathtaking and beautiful, however, they are not unique like Grizzly Man is. That's why Grizzly Man is a much more uniquely filmed movie, and that in itself is breathtaking to watch. Anyways, was there something that interested you of the other recommendations? I'm hoping someone will watch something here that they haven't seen before.

Balder - Fauve is awesome for such a short film. It reminds me of "Ich seh, ich seh", which is a great Austrian horror movie also about two boys, and the tone is generally very similar. The final scene is very simple but really effective, I agree with you there. Also, the scenery reminds me of the mountains of Mars in Total Recall, except less red and with less Arnold. (By the way, cobretti, I've rewatched Total Recall yesterday. Just so you know, the chick with three breasts still holds up well in 1080p.)

I was watching all of the Academy Awards nominated short films and was generally underwhelmed by all of them, and then I watched this one last and was blown away by it.
Also, Total Recall is such a great movie, the remake though... sheesh. Stay away from that one.

Yep, first time, I'm glad I watched it, it's very good. Also, Total Recall is such a great movie, the remake though... sheesh. Stay away from that one.
Note taken. No interest in the remake here.

So it’s time I take the challenge and dig into this list. Balder picked a good one to start because it’s short. Will I like it? The CandidateA short but intriguing flick about a guy who gets royally fucked. In part because he’s fucking bald but also for another reason which provides a pretty good twist. Nice reminder that Prince Harry’s bitch is pretty good looking and I wouldn’t mind giving her some of my man meat with a side of seed, so that will get it a star. Robert Picardo is in it, almost famous for playing the emergency medical hologram on Star Trek: Voyager, one of the few likable characters on that show, so that earns two stars. Disappointed in the lack of karate, gunfights, or female nudity but not the worst way to spend 20 minutes. I approve but only slightly. 3/5 stars.

FauveAt first, I misread the title and thought it said “Favre” as in NFL legend Brett Favre. Now that would be an interesting subject for a movie. Sadly, this movie wasn’t about the Green Bay hall of fame quarterback. It’s about, or should I say aboot a couple of kids, French Canadian kids getting into some shit then one sees some wildlife at the end and gets all weepy and shit. The movie was in a language that wasn’t American English, which really upset me because that meant I had to read and shit. At least this movie has something that resembles a body count so that’s something, big no action or big titties or anything in sight. Just a couple of kids putzing around. 1/5 needs more spice.

Lol, you have no feelings. Have you no nostalgia for playing around outside in am area where you weren't supposed to be? Because Fauve is that film that tells that story.
