I haven't seen this movie in many, many years, but it has been at the back of my mind for some time now to rewatch it, especially since Last Blood is out in theaters. This is simply the best Rambo movie, back when Rambo wasn't some superhero action star, back when he was human and back when he was a very well-made character. Sure the action superstar Rambo is also cool, but this is character here makes for a much better film than any of the sequels. 5/5.

I believe I made my case for this movie before somewhere in this forum. I think it was in the First Blood Part 2 thread. This movie is the best out of all of them. I love the others, but this one is genuine to the core. There was a time in the US when Vietnam Vets were shit on all because politics were more important than the men who fought for their country. This story did an excellent job of analyzing the chasms that lay between the generations (Even veterans...My grandfather once told me that Vietnam vets were ostracized by WWII vets at the VFW, and that pissed him off.) and even the geographic differences within the country alone. Stallone took something so raw in the hearts of many vets in 1982, and he made their angst so abundantly clear to the masses. This movie is highly emotional in the end, yet it is balanced with amazing action while topped off with plenty of (real, not CG) explosions.
This is Stallone at his finest.

Some of the background to the movie is great. It languished in development hell for a while with Steve McQueen wanting to do it and having Kirk Douglas as Col Trautman at one time.

It was in the Rambo IV discussion btw, that's the only other Rambo movie we discussed I believe. Completely agree with your assessment. This movie brings some quality and important political commentary of the situation Vietnam veterans were facing at the time, while also bringing some seriously great action set pieces. It sets this action movie apart from most other action movies. An action movie can be great because it has great action, but this movie has a lot of heart as well. EDIT: sorry dschult3 apparently I was wrong. We did discuss Rambo II.

EDIT: sorry dschult3 apparently I was wrong. We did discuss Rambo II. No big deal. This place has quite a long history now. It is hard to remember which thread is which. All that matters is that everyone knows that Rambo is awesome.

Excellent movie, he made that tiny town a complete war zone, it was cool to watch one man creating all that chaos.
I also thought we covered this before, and even talked about how great his acting about his PTSD was.
Like we said in the other thread, Part 2 was better, but this one definitely kicks ass, and it is still a 10 out of 10.

I was sure we had discussed this one before! Maybe on the old pub? Anyway, it's Rambo. Great acting, discussion on PTSD/war politics and chaos. A very appropriate introduction to what would become one of the series that defined action movies. 5/5

First, Rambo is not my husbando. I am just a big fan of his work. I demand an apology.
Rambo: First Blood Part 1 rules. It has Stallone in it, which rules. My only issue with this movie is Rambo only kills one person, and by mistake. I like it best when Rambo kills everybody. Although I like the other two in the original trilogy better, I still very much enjoy Part 1. 5/5 total classic.

It got in on DVD to see what all the fuss was about. It's genuinely deeper that I expected. Rambo's got a few screws loose from being in the Vietnam War, so when the cops treat him like shit, he declares war with all his skill and experience and really makes them pay. That bit at the end, made me see he wasn't just some unbeatable Hollywood musclehead.

Pour out your 40 and watch this movie again. It is time we remember Brian Dennehy. He was such a good "bad guy" actor. Rest in peace, Mr. Dennehy.
