This movie will make you a god damned sexual Tyrannosaurus, just like me.
Predator is one of those classic science fiction movies that are just so damn good that it'll transcend through time and space for all generations to come. It has Arnold in his prime and pairs him up with god damn Carl Wheathers, who is also awesome. The first half is not even a sci-fi movie, it is just one of the best Vietnam-esque action movies ever, full of memorable lines and comradery. Then it becomes this fantastic science fiction horror movie where one of the coolest horror creatures in movie history hunts down these marines. It's endlessly quotable and it packs such a great time in that short run-time. It's the apex boy's dream movie. 5/5 of course.

He is so damn likeable as an actor. I remember when I first watched him in Predator when I was getting into movies and didn't think much of him as Arnold was taking all of the spotlight, but after having watched him in the Rocky movies my appreciation for him grew immensely. |

I remember when I first watched him in Predator when I was getting into movies and didn't think much of him as Arnold was taking all of the spotlight, but after having watched him in the Rocky movies my appreciation for him grew immensely. Have you seen Action Jackson?

As a kid the first Predator was my favorite Predator film, but as an adult I'm a total Predator 2 fanboy. I like the first film but it has a number of cliche action movie elements that bore me now (ex: jungle warfare, unrealistic builds on the male heroes, etc.), so for that reason I don't consider it a landmark classic like most people do. For me it's more of a fun, cartoony popcorn flick than a serious thriller, so I give it a 4/5.

The Predator rules, 10 out of 10. I'm planning to watch the original this week again. I haven't seen the new one though.

I watched it again just a few days ago and, while some of the effects aren't as good nowadays, the film itself holds up perfectly well. All the characters have a great chemistry among them, the Predator himself has a great design (especially when he takes the mask off), the action scenes are well made and full of practical explosions. Above all else, the movie does something similar to Aliens, in that we see this group of invincible looking badasses but then throw them into a panic and starts picking them one by one. It does a lot to convince the public that the Predator is threatening and that it could, alone, take down that entire group. That's why I like so much the scene in which they start desperately mowing down the entire forest with their guns, in clear desperation.
I also like the suggested mythos behind the creature: that the Predator is from an Alien race that hunts for sport, comes down to Earth only in the hottest years (so their heat vision is better used), that it is well equiped (we not only see his high-tech weapons, but also he using a medkit) and that it values a fair fight and won't shoot at an unarmed person. Dutch's arc is also very well made: how he starts as a well-prepared strong badass, then becomes a prey running for his life, then understands his own situation and decides to fight back, finally out-clevering the Predator.
5/5 here, a horror classic and the manliest movie ever made. Also, as you guys already pointed out, it has the best handshake scene.

Great movie, been a while since I've seen it so I need to rewatch. I remember hearing that Jean Claude Van Damme got fired from this movie or something, I think he was originally supposed to be the Predator.

My recent adopted hatred of african american men has led me to develop a fascination with Predator 1 and view it as a testament to fascist american 80s culture and the combined destructive cooperative masculinity of the black man and the white man. Black american men and white american men working in tandem with one another always results in pure destructive fascism.  That handshake between Dutch and Dillion at the beginning of the film is symbolic of the mutualistic relationship the black man and the white man share with one another in their role of dominating the americas through american fascism.  And on top of all that, on top of having a cast of pure blooded white american men and black american men, Predator also stars literally the only evil american indian the world has ever known: Sonny Landham  Predator is fascinating to me because it represents not just black masculinity, not just white american masculinity, but also the fall of the american indian. In light of all of this, I have decided to change my rating to 1/5. Predator is the film I love to hate. It's a fascinating example of american fascism. I'm so glad it was made because it beautifully illustrates so many things that have blighted the americas in spectacular mainstream cinematic fashion. THANK YOU HOLLYWOOD FOR MAKING THIS CULT CLASSIC! |
