An important question from the 1980s can FINALLY be answered with your help. Let's end this debate once and for all!

I actually like it. Still looking for my own copy but I've played it on emulators before and I really enjoyed it. Definitely a walk-through game though.

What saddens me is that they never gave another try at an action-platformer Zelda. Konjak made very high quality fangame (Legend of Princess) that proves it could be really awesome: It's free; it's also very short, but very replayable. It's available on his site.
I quite liked Zelda 2 when I played it as a kid. The game isn't as cryptic as people make it out to be: I beat it without any walkthroughs or outside hints, and I only had a very basic understanding of english (so the game was even more confusing to me than it should be, and I could still beat it as a kid).

I only played the clone Battle of Olympus (the base game for God of War?), and I enjoyed it. Since the game really is a clone of Zelda 2 I assume there's nothing actually wrong with that game.

If I had played Zelda II when it was new I might have been disappointed that they took the first game and turned it into a sidescroller. But I didn't and already knew we have great games like A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening that went back to form. So I enjoy Zelda II but haven't actually beaten it, I should work on that.

Spirit Bomb is a big fan of this game, if I remember right. Do I?

I wouldn't call the 99999th 2d platformer to be released on the NES innovative. At the same time, I did have some fun with Zelda II.
I thought the question of the 1980s was "What the hell is on Gorbachev's head?"

Yes, Danny boy. Zelda 2 kicks ass. It's one of only 4 Zelda games I really like, the others being OoT, Majora's Mask, and Link's Awakening (the latter only for the unique story though). Zelda 2 actually had great gameplay, unlike the original LoZ, which is why I think it has aged much better than the first one has (additionally, I despise top down perspectives in 2D video games). Zelda 2 also has a better challenge level, and it has this spooky vibe throughout that I really like.
It's a very underrated game.

Spirit Bomb - Also, it's the only Zelda game with a solid magic system, since the others are more focused on items and equipment. I do agree with your list, by the way - although I would add the 1st game anyway, as I don't have any problem with the top-down perspective and it's the only completely open Zelda game. I actually see it as one of the few completely open games ever - you're not being guided through quests/map markers or any of that shit, only through exploration, and you can pretty much explore anything in any order with the exception of the final dungeon; also, each screen is unique, unlike most open-world games nowadays, in which you find the same structure repeated thoughout the map (think of the towers in Ubisoft games). The more I think about it, I'm more sure that Zelda 1 is the only real open-world game I've ever played, since even huge open-worlds like in Skyrim still keep directing you towards quests/objectives and have a lot of repetition in their maps.

The Legend of Zelda is definitely not an open-world game. Unlike what is written in Wikipedia, the term "open-world" went on to be used to describe the technical aspect in which the play area in a game is mostly composed of a larger, single zone, avoiding constant screen changes and loading screens/rooms. But I agree with you, Cervantes, and I say that if the first Legend of Zelda had an enhanced port and Nintendo forgot to slap the name "Zelda" on it, chances are it would be called one of the most innovative games ever made, simply because we don't games that open and expansive being released anymore.

Zelda II may be a divisive NES game, but with restore points (Thereby fixing the unfair save system) it is a wonderful WIIU and 3DS game!

I'm of two minds of Zelda II. I could never get into it back in the day. I did enjoy it more on the 3DS with save states, but I think that the old save system probably stretched out peoples' playthroughs and allowed them to get properly good at the game. As it is, I found it very difficult until I got the downward thrust.
