So after all that Kurt Russell talk lately I decided to watch Escape from L.A. . Now I haven't seen this movie since the 90's and didn't remember much of it and was never a fan of Escape from New York because I always thought it was boring and too B movieish.
But wow Escape from L.A. was epic. Snake Pliskin is such a bad ass. In my age it's not easy for me to get a boner for badasses as easy as it was from my teenage years but Pliskin has to be an acception. Snake Pliskin > John Wick although I love John.
The movie was paced very well with great performances and without a dull moment. And that ending wow, just adds to the badassnes of Pliskin. One of the best movies of its era. Feels very 80's although it was filmed in 96.
Escape from L.A. > Mad Max

I guess I gotta watch the sequel (this movie). I've heard that it sucks compared to the original. It'll be an interesting watch, just hope that the movie will be interesting as well.

My views tend to be controversial so the chances of you liking this more than the first one is pretty low. But as for myself, I loved Escape from L.A. The first movie felt like a cheesy B movie bore fest to me although i know it loved by many. But still give it a watch. I will like to know everyones thoughts on it.

OOOOOH boy.... This movie. It has been years, so I can't be very definitive about it, but I recall that it was basically the same thing as the first one, but not as good. I'll have to rewatch it after 20 years to be more specific about it though.

For your information, this movie is on Tubi.TV now, but for non-Americans like myself you'll need a VPN set to the US. Anyways, Bogard, I'm glad you brought this movie to my attention again because this was not as bad as everyone says it is. Here's what I thought about it: "I was very interested in watching this movie when I heard that someone actually preferred this movie over the original, since at first I had only heard negative things about it. John Carpenter rarely makes any sequels, but this is one of those rare ones. So how is it? It is not bad at all. If you liked the first movie, then this is very similar, and maybe that is what people did not like about it. It is too similar in fact. Carpenter himself have said that he prefers this over the first one, and I can see why. If you look at these movies as separate movies, and that they cover the same plot, I must say that Escape from L.A. is the more refined movie. It does not come off as cheap and the set pieces are awesome. There is one giant exception though, and that is the CGI. Oh my fuck does the CGI look bad. Even at the time of release those effects looked terrible, and they have aged like milk. What has not aged liked milk on the other hand is Kurt Russell. He is just as awesome as he was in the first movie, if not cooler. He must be a very dedicated actor to keep his appearance in order and actually fit the same costume as 15 years ago. It is impressive I must say. I would say that this movie is pretty much on par with the original movie. Some things are improved upon, but the thing is, the film is just a rehash of the first one in many regards, and the point of a sequel is to do something different I think. Still very fun." 3/5

Escape from L.A. felt like a remake that was better than the original. It's like John carpenter watched Escape from New York and said "I could make this better" . Kurt Russel was awesome in Escape from L.A. to the point where he could give John Wick a run for his money, such a bad ass. Like you said the set pieces were very good and so were the explosions and effects. The movie was paced very well without a dull moment. And that ending was also great i thought. over all I thought it was a great 80's action movie that was filmed in the 90's.

Had Escape from L.A. been made first with the same budget and in the 80's, I think this would be a definitive classic. Like you said, Carpenter thought he could make a better film and then made a sequel, that's really a remake in reality. If he had made this movie in the 80's with this budget there would be no CGI, the film would look perfect and it would have been a very original film.
