Solid list. However, my avatar disagrees with your number 2 not being number 1. It seems to be a debate that I've been losing since the mid 90s, though. I noticed that your list doesn't include the formally Japanese exclusive titles that now have translations. Are you going for original releases only?

I haven't played 20 so my list is going to be shorter and also controversial LoL. I always thought Chrono trigure was a good game but didn't see what every one else saw. Great gamplay but the story was ok, not great. Even the time travel thing i think Terranigma did it better.
And I really couldn't get into Earthbound. Still don't get what people love about it. The only explanation on why the game is soo great that people give me is " Well your character is just an ordinary kid with ordinary objects as weapons" Which to me is not a selling point but quite the opposite.
And nice to see Secret of Mana high on your list stratogustav. A lot of people are giving it shit lately like the snes drunk who claimed to him the game was annoying to play without a fix patch on the rom.

Are you going for original releases only? This list was made with non Japanese exclusives, so something like Tales Of Phantasia, Trials Of Mana, Front Mission, Fire Emblem Mystery Of The Emblem, Dragon Quest V, Shin Megami Tensei, Mystic Ark, etc., don't qualify for mine, but you guys are welcomed to include them on your own ranks. I'm always curious to see what people like. |

Final Fantasy V had an outstanding job system for the time, so I'd include that one as well. |

I just read a glowing review from a person on another forum for Terranigma. Since that was in Europe only, has anyone here played that game? Color me intrigued. I'd like to know more.

I finished Terranigma in the late 2000's and it truly is an outstanding game in every sense of the word. As you can see on my list from above it's just out of my top five in sixth place. The game is almost like a 16bit Kingdom Hearts with it's action RPG and Disneyish art style. The main character even looks like Sora. The gameplay and story are great with amazing visuals for the console. But one thing Terranigma has over every other RPG on the system is the ending. it has the best ending in any RPG of that era imo. Gives me goosebumps even thinking about it. I have no Idea why it wasn't released in the US. |

I wonder if Terranigma is going to be re-released anytime soon. if i wasn't such a big Final Fantasy fan I would put Secret of Mana as my favourite RPG on the system. And SoM2 is even better than the first in many ways even though i still prefer the first one. Best 2D action RPG's of all time imo. As for Terranigma according to wikipedia there was a petition this year for HD re-release, but are having problems due to licensing issues. I get the feeling it's going to be a game that's lost to time and only really accessible through emulation like many classics unfortunately. |
