This movie is outstanding. I used to show it in my class when my curriculum was different. It is perfect for US history, because the story, which is very nice, starts at the end of World War I, and it concludes at the end of World War II. You see situations that include George that are part of the story's background. That includes Spanish Influenza, the Roaring 20s, the Great Depression and a run on the bank, World War II's conservation efforts, collection drives, enlistment drives, home security, and ultimately the celebration of the war's end. I'm always astounded at how kids hate it at first because it is in black & white, but then love it so much by the end that they continually watch it for years to come. I now have former students who are out of college who watch it because of my old curriculum.
I guess my only gripe with the story is the moral that you should accept what you've got at home at all times. I go back and forth on that one. I understand why they said that, but human kind only gets better when they realize that they can do better, find the initiative to make a difference, and finally make the change that they want. I suppose a person has to give up on that ideal if it becomes an unhealthy focus in their life. I don't really think George was at that point, though. I suppose they couldn't make it too dark in 1946, since the censor board was still in existence, though.

This is one of my picks for our 12 Films of Christmas. I'm actually saving it for last as it's the highest rated Christmas movie of all time on IMDb.

I love this movie. I only saw it once when I was a kid, and I still remember it. It is extremely hard to be that memorable. It shows how great of a movie this is.

Finally got down to watch it. Here's my review:
"Today I had my last exam for this semester and my roommate and I wrap up this year's 12 Films of Christmas, what a day, and what a movie to end on. It's a Wonderful Life is a movie I have wanted to watch for some time now, but the thing about Christmas movies is that they have a very limited time window where it makes sense to watch it, and seeing how I did not get my chance to watch it last year, I was definitely going to watch it this year. I saved this for last as I thought it would have the best finale to our Christmas marathon, and I think it was an excellent choice. It was kind of funny that this movie is being watched it several of the other Christmas movies we watched. It is like this movie is omnipresent and it was destined to be watched by us.
It's a Wonderful Life is fantastic. It has such a build up the entire movie before one of the greatest pay-offs in movie history. Watching George's life as he grows up sacrificing every good he has for the betterment of his piers is so admirable, and damn if James Stewart does not play one of his most wholesome characters yet. It is the perfect casting choice. This movie is so influential that most people have only watched the movies and specials that pay homage to it. But nothing beats the original I must say. One of the all time greatest Christmas movies, and up there with my personal favorite Christmas movies." 5/5 Simply outstanding.

This movie has a structure that wouldn't be done today. We hear about George's life through the angels, like a prologue of sorts. Then, the second half is George building up to take the plunge, but being shown the error of his thinking. If this movie were to be remade, it would start with George getting ready at the bridge, then proceed to be walked through the various parts of his life where he mattered, in between being shown around the nightmare version of his hometown.
Because the loss of that $8000 was such a big deal, with his business on the ropes, he fell into despair. He wasn't going to just martyr himself for his family (life insurance), but self-delete himself for being a failure. This is why Heaven decided to step in and answer the prayers for George.
Sure, he may have got his self worth back in the end, but it didn't resolve his issue with the money. However, the good people of Bedford Falls owed George and they knew it, so they came in and recouped that "missing" money. Because: "Remember, George: no man is a failure who has friends," says Clarence. Just how many of us can say that they're as fortunate as George?
