Because modern consoles are designed to sit far away from you as a media center and old ones you sat 1-2 feet away from.

My wireless Xbox One controller has a headphone jack and it works wonderfully (using it with my pc) - just connect any generic headphone and the pc instantly switches the audio output to it. I didn't even knew this until last week, it's awesome.
So I would argue that, at least for the Xbox One, the modern implementation of the headphone jack is better than the one on the Genesis, as you don't have to sit close to your system. I don't know if the PS4 or the Switch have similar implementations.
Edit: added the information that it's the wireless controller.

Before the Xbox One controller, Trip Hawkins was doing the same thing with the 3DO's controller! Its controller has a headphone jack! WHY DID THIS NOT BECOME THE NORM WITHIN THE INDUSTRY??? Even a headphone jack on the console itself (like with the Model 1 Genesis) is still way better than having no headphone jack at all IMO. |

Spirit Bomb - Yep, a standard headphone jack on the controller should've always been the standard after the 3DO, it's such a practical thing.

I love this controller feature on my PS4 specially considering it won't let you add your own Bluetooth headphones without a licensed dongle.
The Nintendo Switch is the old school type because it dies have the jack for headphones on the console, but it is missing it on the controller, and since I always play it on dock mode it makes me wish it had it on the controller too.

I'm also not sure if the headphone jack in the Switch is usable when it's docked either. I haven't tested that(don't remember where the jack is either, don't use it as a portable much). |
