With Ip man 4 on the way I decided to watch the entire series again, and they have to be one of the greatest trilogies of all time. I know the the third movie isn't as good as the second and the second isn't as good as the first movie but they are all solid movies in their own right.
Donnie Yen is such a legend that he has cemented his name or even surpassed the likes of Jacky Chan and Jet lee. And there couldn't of been a better casting choice for Ip Man. I love these movies from the amazing colourful characters that have plenty of depth to them to the incredibly done well action which rivals that of John Wick which is also paced out very well through the movies and to the story telling and cinematography which in my opinion should be award winning.
What do you guys think of the series?.

I've watched all three movies and will probably watch the 4th one as well once it becomes available. I like the series, but I disagree heavily with your statement regarding Donnie Yen surpassing Jackie Chan. Jackie Chan is legendary and he's had quite a few legendary fight scenes, whereas I would argue that Ip Man has good fight scenes, but none of them are legendary. I think he fights much better than 95% of all action movies, but these movies are not at the top. The films themselves are flawed, but they appeal to the general audience and they are good by all means, but again, not legendary good. I know people criticize the 3rd film a lot, but I actually think it's better than the 2nd one. I watched all three of them last year and I here's my reviews of them: Ip Man "Ip Man is thoroughly entertaining and fun to watch, but there is not much substance to really blow me away. Donnie Yen and that guy who played Ricky from Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky, are very good, but do not add that extra something that truly makes film history like Bruce Lee of Jackie Chan. The fight scenes are well choreographed, but again something is missing that would have made them legendary. The fights look good, but due to too much cutting, the flow is interupted and it looks worse than it probably could be. Setting is cool, but the story is bland. Overall I think it is very solid, but it had the potential of being iconic." 3.5/5 Ip Man 2 "The first Ip Man movie was far from perfect, but it was very entertaining and grounded. This movie is still entertaining in its fights, but is just ridiculous. It feels very much like a Chinese blockbuster with its bias. Westerners bad, Chinese good. The Westerner is of course extremely cocky and overconfident, while also being called literally the devil. The fights are entertaining, but not great. So much editing makes it look like Donny Yen does not know how to fight. Also, the pregnancy side plot does not amount to anything. Incredibly pointless. A very run of the mill movie. Overrated." 2.5/5 Ip Man 3 "Almost as good as the original and much better than the second. The story definitely has its flaws with an unexplained thug subplot. The fighting however has been vastly improved upon due to much less cutting. Still, it is not legendary, but pretty good. Pretty cool to see Mike Tyson in acting. His fighting looks awesome, and he is a beast. Good thing they subtitled him though, haha." 3.5/5 So overall it's a decent series, one that hasn't been run into the ground yet. If you want to watch a modern martial arts movie that's legendary though go watch The Raid. That is so good that it's honestly on par with the very best of Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee etc, and even surpasses them in terms of movie quality. We had a discussion of it a long time ago, but you can easily find the thread for it in the Film Vault. ModdedCentipede, please add this thread to the film vault as this is a movie discussion thread.

As for Ip Man 2 being bias to chinese, that's actually very common in chinese movies when referring to a specific time in history. Jacky Chan and Jet Lee movies have it also. And the whole pregnancy thing was coinciding with Ip Man's actual life where he had a second child in that time frame of his life whre this movie is based on as to add some historical facts with the fictionalised depiction. And that ending with Bruce Lee was epic in Ip Man 2. For me this trilogy is perfect and I Think Donnie Yen is up there with the greats, but my views are very controversial anyway. I think John Wick 2 was amazing and way better than the first and also think part 3 kinda sucked. So I expect a lot of disagreements.

Even though I think this is a slightly overrated series, I do enjoy it quite a lot, and it seems a lot of people like it. Chinese movies sometimes have a lot of bias and it can cheapen the movie sometimes. This is a flaw that any nationality can suffer from. As foe John Wick, I haven't seen the third one yet, but the second one is generally regarded as inferior to the first one, but in my opinion they're about the same. The first one has a better storyline and better pacing, while the second one has amazing action.

Just watched the fourth and final Ip Man movie, and thank fuck it's the last one because this movie is abysmal: "Wow holy shit this movie is bad. The Ip Man series has never impressed me much, but most of its entries are solid. The fighting choreography is usually good, although never super amazing, but Ip Man 4 is just embarrassing. These actors know how to fight, but the editing is so garbage that it kills the potential in every scene by cutting on every god damn punch. Ip Man 4 has strayed so far away from the original that it is living in fantasy land. Nothing in this movie is grounded, nor is it based in reality. The biggest problem aside from it being a dog shit martial arts movie, is that it is heinously racist. China loves to produces movies that holds Chinese people, culture and their country in high regard, and most of the time, this is forgivable since it is about being patriotic, but this movie crosses that land big time. It portrays all Westerners as the scum of the Earth, every single one of them. There are lots of American characters in this movie since it is set in the US, but it is just ridiculous how awful all of these characters are. They cheat, are white supremacists, unfair, corrupt and does not do a single thing right. The Chinese people in this movie though has to stick together to survive and live in peace. It is a disgusting movie in this regard and everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves. The inclusion of a Bruce Lee impersonator added nothing to the actual story and only served to give us homages, some of which were alright, but entirely pointless. This movie is so bad that I would rather want to watch a shitty martial arts movie with no story than watch this one. Robo Vampire has the most incoherent story I have ever seen in a movie and it has no budget, but I would rather watch that again than this filth." 1/5 Bogard, have you watched this one yet? centipede, this film series discussion is still missing from the vault. Could you add it?

I recently watched all 4 movies. These are my scores: IP Man 1: 9/10 IP Man 2: 9/10 IP Man 3: 8/10 IP Man 4: 8/10 The soundtrack alone of these movies is 10 out of 10. The background music is just outstanding. It reminds of the stuff Team Ninja uses in their DOA and Warriors games. I actually cried at the end of both IP Man 3 and IP Man 4, but they were not as exciting as the first 2. The second was my favorite. IP Man 1 was very moving indeed, an excellent classic martial arts movie, and IP Man 2 was as well, they both kept me cheering the whole time. Master Hung looks exactly like my mechanic Moses, the whole time he was fighting Wallace I was literally feeling as if I was watching my mechanic fighting. I think I jumped from my sofa a few times just out of pure excitement to see those flying kicks he was throwing. It really sucked when he lost, and died. IP Man 3 was a major down from the second one, and it felt about the same quality as IP Man 4, but it still had some excellent moments like seeing IP Man very angry walking with a stick ready to kick some butt. That IP Man 3 Mike Tyson Punch-Out!! punch was outstanding. Also seeing the one inch punch that Bruce Lee later used by IP Man himself was a really nice touch. I also recommend Master Z which is a Netflix spin-off. IP Man 4 had some great moments too, but it was more on the family emotional side like IP Man 3, instead of the struggling emotional side like the first 2 movies, although all 4 movies are quite emotional. There were some very clear Guile moments there that were outstanding. It reminded me a bit of Birth Of The Dragon which is another movie I also liked. Seeing Master Chiang in action was badass too, you can tell that she and the other masters really kick ass in real life. I don't want to give more spoilers, but in general this is an outstanding franchise. I could easily watch these movies many times over like some kind of music video, and I wouldn't get bored of them.

stratogustav, I've got to ask man, weren't you annoyed by the blatant racism and Chinese nationalism shown in the 4th movie? I have been exposed to so many movies like that, at some point you just assume it is part of the story, even though you know it has a political agenda, so it doesn't bother me as much. In fact, I just take it as butthurt behavior instead of actual racism, in other words more like jealousy, or a way to justify a lost. Obviously most real people aren't like that, but I imagine that if you get your ass kick by a foreign student it is like the easiest way for a young girl to find retaliation. You know how schools are, everyone talks shit about everyone in their back even if they are banging each other when they are face to face, and the parents will always go on the side of their kids no matter what, so they will act the same way just to protect them. It is like the criticism Birds Of Pray received for the feminism. It didn't bother me because that's just how Harley Quinn acts, so even if it comes off like feminism, it kind of isn't because she is just wild like that, so it didn't affect me. Unlike Charlie's Angels that was straight up stupid, annoying, and ridiculous. It ruined the movie beyond repair because the use of feminism didn't even make sense, it was just done for the sake of being done. I also have nothing against any kind of nationalism because people have the right to be patriotic, to love their culture, and their traditions. Just look at Japan, they always put their own citizens first, and then they can have the strength to help outside. Obviously everyone making any kind of media here in California has a political agenda, whether is music, film, TV, or even video games. It is annoying to say the least, but there is no much we can do about it because after all, we like the whole free speech thing. It just sucks when they constantly censor the other side. Their publishing companies even have power over other films being made elsewhere in the world, and that's why you see foreign films made in association with local publishing companies. It also sucks when the likes of George Soros export the same kind of political agendas elsewhere in the world through whatever media outlets he puts money on, at this point almost in every country, and on all major news networks around the world. I guess it is a new modern futuristic form of getting involved in the politics of other countries right under their noses without they can notice anything. What sucks is that their press is no longer theirs, since it is basically fulfilling the agendas send from here, and we don't like it, but at this point they have brainwashed so many people there is no much that can be done.
