SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a discussion thread for the new Star Wars movie, and it'll be open for spoilers. You're warned.
I know you Americans don't get to watch this movie just yet, but we in Europe have gotten a chance to see it now, and I just came back from the premiere. Here's my opinions on the film:
"Soulless. Where The Last Jedi proved that a single individual (Rian Johnson) could have too much power, The Rise of Skywalker proved that a bunch of good intentions and sorry-es could not save this franchise from becoming what I hate. I remember when Star Wars was this holy franchise, where a new Star Wars movie was virtually inconceivable. After watching so many of these come out in the last 5 years or so, a launch of a new Star Wars movie is now completely indifferent from any other blockbuster. The Rise of Skywalker tries in vain to fix what The Last Jedi broke, but after such a hot mess that The Last Jedi was, it was indeed impossible to fix. It is like breaking a ceramic mug. You can try to glue it back together, but it will never be perfect again. I will not go into too much details for that abomination of a movie Episode VIII is, but this movie tried to fix so many things, and what it did fix alright was these things: Luke Skywalker is true to his character now even though he is almost non-existent in this film, Rose has almost no screen time (fantastic) and there were no apparent plot holes or lame story-lines in this movie like a casino planet or whatever. The rest of the things this movie tried to fix were less successful. The Knights of Ren were incredibly underwhelming as they did nothing of interest, Snoke being a clone or something was alright but again he is such a retarded character by now that his character will never be fixed properly, Finn and Poe are not terrible in this movie but they are neither awesome. There are many things I did not particularly like in this movie as well. Even though Darth Sidious return was cool, I felt he did not fit the story at all. Why is he the main villain now? Kylo Ren has flip flopped the entire trilogy and finally turns good and it is anti-climactic as fuck. Darth Sidious is so powerful that the inclusion of space ships feel completely pointless just like the light saber duels in this movie. The light sabers fights are so underwhelming and soulless, I honestly prefer much more watching Alec Guinness fighting Vader in A New Hope. I mean this is 2019 for fucks sake, Disney has all the money in the world to make this a fantastic movie, why is it so soulless and underwhelming? When I watch any of the originals or prequels, I can see the passion behind those movies. I can tell that a passionate storyteller (George Lucas) was behind those. This trilogy on the other hand feels like it has a bunch of social scientists behind it that presented this to a corporate board of directors for approval. I did not care for the ending, I did not give a shit about any of the new characters including the main ones (Rey, Kylo Ren, Poe, Finn etc.), the light saber fights and the space battle were incredibly underwhelming and it had no soul at all. This just cements the fact that the new Star Wars trilogy is a complete cinematic failure. This is just another generic blockbuster, this is not the magical Star Wars I know." 2/5

One of the troubles with the new trilogy, I think, is that the audience associates Star Wars with its classic cast of Han, Chewie, Ob Wan, and then they tried to thrust these new, unfamiliar characters onto the audience, so it didn't feel like Star Wars. And let's not talk about the half-assed setting.

I wonder if its internet pages will get targeted by a bot-spammer hating campaign like The Last Jedi did. It's amazing how far some bat-shit crazy SW fans will go. As much as I despise Disney, even I wouldn't make fake accounts just to attack their official sites and movie websites like IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. Talk about desperation.

I wonder when Star Wars fans will realize that the decline in artistic quality due to creator departure is an ancient trend within the entertainment industry? For anyone who has been following at least some form of art in their life, they should've expected this to happen when Lucas sold the SW franchise.
This is nothing new. Every form of art from comic strips to animation series and film series is full of examples of this. Casey Ruggles and Terry and the Pirates are two of the older examples I can think of where the product was regarded as having declined in quality when the original creators left the strip. Then you have more modern examples like Dragon Ball GT and the Terminator franchise, which were both became scrutinized due to the perceived lack of creator-driven quality control.
And then there's the other well documented modern issue within mainstream AAA art like Star Wars: bureaucracy. With so much money behind feature length films, there's an enormous amount of anxiety on the part of the financers such as the producers and the CEOs. I know this to be true since american animation is ripe with examples like this; just look at The Black Cauldron, The Thief and the Cobbler, and even turds like We're Back: A Dinosaur Story. All three of these films were censored and edited to some degree in order to appeal to a wider demographic. Based on what I've read about The Rise of Skywalker, a similar problem happened where Kathleen Kennedy turned down several working scripts to a point where one of the writers left out of frustration. Disney has always been one of the biggest offenders when it comes to bureaucratic interference in film. This is one of the reasons why I don't support the american film industry.
Let's just face it, Star Wars will never be the same. And as much as I enjoyed many aspects of the prequels, you'd have to be crazy to deny that they had serious problems. Star Wars fanboys need to smell the coffee and move on with their lives.

My official review:I saw this movie yesterday, and I thought it was fantastic, pure fan service for me, I love how even after 42 years, many of the settings, like the desert areas, and rocks still look from 1977, I also like how all the costumes also look from the 70s. I particularly loved how they blasted John Williams incredible pieces every single second of the movie. You simply can't go wrong by blasting the best soundtrack humanity has ever produced on every single scene. It was nice to learn that Luke taught the force to his sister, now I know why she was able to fly through space before. It was nice seeing them young again too, I just wish we had more of that. I liked we heard all the past Jedi voices too. I also liked how the characters developed in very unexpected ways. For example I never expected Kylo Ren giving his life for Rey, but somehow they end up kissing which it is what I wanted because there was so much sexual tension between them, and it finally happened. It is so cliché, but exactly what this saga needed since Episode II. I also like the emphasis on Eastern spirituality by linking meditation, and astral projections to the notion of Jedi. I feel it is a very important key element to further cement the meaning of belief, and faith behind the connection to the force, and how it responds to your intentions. The light saber fight scene in the ocean looked very cool, nice choice of a setting to have it, plus the 70's Japanese movie jumps, and fight moves, were also cool to see too. It was also very nice of them to show Solo, and Luke, again, even after death, those scenes were very good. I also liked how the Rebel Alliance still keeps all those iconic ships like the B-Wing fighter, the Y-Wing Starfighter, the A-Wing fighter, the Snowspeeder, and even the N-1 Starfighter. Seeing them all together was really cool. I even got very emotional towards the end, it was a satisfying way to end this episode for me. Rey is a legit Skywalker because blood is only one way to carry knowledge from your ancestors. In other words if a kid learns your way of seeing the world, that kid is carrying you too, through the genes that kid is forming inside to pass onto his/her own children. It is just another way to keep a lineage, and Rey demonstrated she understands that Skywalker vision. On top of that the movie had Lando, and Lando came to save the day too, so just for having Lando it is a 10 out of 10. I really loved every single part of the movie. It is nice to see that 3PO, Chewbacca, and R2-D2 made it all the way to the end of the saga without dying. They got me for a second with Chewbacca, but it was just a temporary scare. I would had loved if they would had found a way to bring Vader back, even in his Anakin form for a last time, I was actually expecting it, but it didn't happen, so many things could definitely have been added to the story to make it better, but that would probably just extend the saga, and make it longer, instead of getting rid of the Sith now, which was important to do, and what a great way to end him. All those lightings were also on point for those scenes, because it adds to the grandiose nature of those archetypes. In general I was pleased with the whole experience, and all the comedic moments were the right amount too, just like the special effects action moments were, great delivery too.

I have been seeing people online complaining about some plotholes, and I can't believe they can't see the obvious answers to these things. A lot of those plotholes are automatically solved because of prophecy, if prophecy is meant to transcend time, it means a lot of things are meant to be.
For example it wasn't meant for Luke to find the dagger, but it was meant for Rei. It was meant for that ship to be abandoned on that rock, the crew of that ship probably died in those sands. It was also meant to be for Rei to fall on that exact spot. It was meant to be for the dagger to be designed that way, and for the piece of Death Star to land like that. All the characters are doing is discovering their story, not making it.
Also people forget to mention the plothole of why the Sith didn't transfer to Rei if he got what he wanted. He got killed by Rei supposedly, but she only served as a mirror, she didn't kill him, he killed himself.
He obviously didn't like Rei's parents, the movie made this very clear when he talked about them, he felt it wasn't worth it to continue living through his son, instead he preferred to live longer, and just wait for his grandaughter who was probably born already when he made that decision. That's pretty straightforward.
About keeping the fleet in one place, it was obviously at purpose. He wanted to have something to show off to Rei, he wanted to impress her, and make easier her decision for her to accept her destiny as a Sith, he also planned her friends to come, that's why he announced himself to everyone, and he didn't want to kill them because he wanted to use them as bait for her to accept the offering.
She is a Skywalker because she was raised with that vision, and having that vision is more important than having the blood. When she gets kids her genes have already been transformed based on her own life experience, and she can transfer that to her offspring. She doesn't even need to have her own kids. She can just teach that vision to someone, and continue the lineage that way.
The sexual tension between Kylo Ren and Rei was obvious throughout the movies, I don't know how people didn't see this. It almost felt like the tension between a couple in an arranged marriage that already accepted it was inevitable for them to love each other.
I still hope Finn gets to bang Rei in upcoming movies, he clearly likes her, and deserves some of that ass. Now that Kylo is dead she can do that.
Lando is badass, but he didn't get all those people to help based on his own prestige alone, the Sith announced it. Also there was never an opportunity like this, where they will all be in one spot. A lot of people react when it is absolutely necessary, and this time the tech is probably far superior to make something like this happen. Plus everyone already knew what was going on because of that announcement, and it made it easier to organize.
That planet was hard to reach because it is in a tricky location to spot, but once the location is spotted the hard way, anyone can easily hyperspace jump to their atmosphere, which is likely a newly developed advancement in the skipping technology. The girl didn't need the coin to leave her planet because everyone got an override to serve in the mission.
All these things are obvious. The Sith didn't want to kill Rei, he just wanted to provoque her, to give her temptation. He just didn't count with her giving up her own life, and there was nothing he could do about that. Just like Rei couldn't do anything about Kylo giving up his life for her. The only real plothole is why can't the Sith stop shooting when he is already killing himself, I give people that one, but that plothole is ancient from previous movies.

This could be really good if you were drunk or high (I do not condone either for those that should refrain), BUT I could cause mayhem if someone were to see this on shrooms or bath salts.

I don't think any drugs could save me from having nightmares after watching that, but damn, I had no idea it got patched. The closest I knew of that was Sonic, but that one was still on beta.

In 1983, the Death Star was totally obliterated and vaporized. Chunks did not fall from the sky onto another planet. With that being said, the Skywalker story ended. The monopoly mouse cannot change that, no matter how much money they spend to pretend it didn't.
