This week, I finally received my 3DS (it was the New 3DS XL). It's a pretty awesome system, and I'm already having some great fun on it. The 3d feature is quite impressive; it really gives an added depth to the graphics. Here is the thing: when I put it on maximum, I find it somewhat hard to focus and I can feel some eyestrain; on minimum, I found the effect already good enough and quite comfortable, so that's probably how I'll use it for 3d games (or somewhere between minimum and medium, maybe it depends on the game?).
Do you mates also feel this way, or is it because my vision isn't all that great? I'm just curious if anyone find the 3d comfortable enough on maximum. Also, does it increase battery consumption?

I do. If you look up some Derek reviews you'll notice the 3D is what distinguish some of the games experiences from their console counterparts.
For example Kirby Triple Deluxe feels original from the other Dreamland games. Even Donkey Kong Country Returns that is a remake feels like its own thing.
I particularly recommend the 3D for classic games like the Nintendo ones and the Sega ones. There is a new 3DS release that actually contains all the Sega classics that has been released on 3D.
If it bothers you, which to me it doesn't, maybe because I'm used to these kind of technologies, you can at least put it to the minimum settings, and it will still improve the image quality, it makes it look really new and HD.
The whole 3D thing is cool because to me it feels like you are playing with actual toys or holograms instead of simple computer graphics. It gives a more realistic feeling to the gameplay, which is particularly nice for classic games like Kid Icarus or Sonic The Hedgehog.

I will on the New 3DS when I get one. I used my brother's briefly and the 3D is a big improvement over the original model. On that I didn't use 3D much because if you tilt your head or 3DS even a little it wouldn't look right.

Only sometimes as I am using the standard 3DS XL model which requires general steadiness while holding the console. What I tend to get torn between is use of the 3D or the gyroscope as I love using both independent of each other in Mario Kart 7 as well as the Ocarina of Time and Star Fox 64 remakes. The sprite based remasters look excellent as stratogustav mentioned but whereas Kid Icarus has a simpler background palate, the Sega 3D Classics are far more immersive (minus Space Harrier which doesn't support 3D). I disagree about Donkey Kong Country Returns looking better in 3D, I actually think it makes the game look a lot muddier as it does with the new Shinobi game. That's how I perceive it anyway.

Thanks for the heads up, mates! Sadly, I have only one game to really try it for now (Zelda: AlbW), as my other games are NDS ones. But playing it again yesterday, I think I got more used to the maximum setting (no eyestrain at all). As stratogustav said, it indeed makes the game seem... "richer"? But anyway, I still think it's easier to go out of focus when the 3D is on maximum, unless you are perfectly steady; between medium-minimum, the 3d effect was always very consistent, even if I slightly moved my hands/head. It also may depend on the game, as teddykongcountry pointed out; as soon as I get more games to play on it, I'll give my opinions on them. Until now, I'm VERY satisfied with the system and surprised by how well the 3d works (it's definitely a step above using 3d-glasses). By the way, I heard great things about the Sega Classics Collection and how they handled the 3d effect, so I'll certainly look for it. I can't even imagine how a Mega Drive game would look in 3d. Sadly, the cartridge doesn't include all the games released until now, so I hope Sega releases another compilation, as I prefer physical releases for my consoles/handhelds.

I've got to tell you, Mega Drive games in 3D look astonishingly good. Take Galaxy Force II which looked like dung on the Sega hardware. Not only is the game playable on the 3DS, it actually looks like something you might see in a Star Fox 64 game if it were more in the vein of old school computer games. Speaking of Galaxy Force II, that game is included on the first collection they're releasing over here and seeing as how the compilation includes 7 games and two bonus ones, you're basically getting them around 4 dollars a pop (not counting import fees). If Sega does release another compilation, it will be this one:

Some games do have more steady 3D than others, which is why it was ingenious for Nintendo to put a 3D bar to adjust the strength of the 3D.
So always go for the strongest you can do while still holding the steadiness. In this regard some games you can definitely go all the way while others, like I said before, you will have to hold the 3D all the way down, which still gives you an improved image.
@teddy it is surprising you said that about Donkey Kong because to me it looks like the game was purposely designed to be experienced on 3D. It looks beautiful on the Wii, while on the 3DS, it is the 3D what makes it stand out, it gives it a feeling to be a complete different game while still being the same.

I would say I use the 3D function intermittently, and certainly more now with the New 3DS due to the head tracking, but generally not cranked all the way up.

Nope. The original model 3ds makes the games unplayable with it turned on. The new 3ds is a little better but still not enjoyable. I own a 2ds too

Nope. 3D is, has been, and always will be just a gimmick, and I refuse to buy into Nintendo's gimmicks, which is why I bought a 2DS.

I'm confused Maestro. I don't think you can get Melee or the original Paper Mario, even on the 2DS. What is left for you?

The 2DS is as much a gimmick as 3D on the 3DS but neither are bad when employed correctly. Even on the older model 3DS XL which lacks face tracking, Ocarina of Time in 3D is simply an unmatched experience in surreality (making up words from two existing words, what else is new?).

I originally bought a 2DS just so I could play Pokemon X (there was a time when I was obsessed with Pokemon), but unfortunately my interest in Pokemon and JRPGs in general had already pretty much faded by that point, so it was quite a bone headed move on my part, and my 2DS is currently gathering dust. >.< I don't even have any games for it anymore, since I sold my only 3DS game, Pokemon X, years ago.

Ah, fair point. Pokemon has always been a system seller after all.
