It is important to clarify this is one of my favorite games of all time, so my bias is unmatchable.
This was a PlayStation 2 exclusive, but it has been released digitally on the PlayStation 3 as well.
In terms of gameplay you have to go back and forth (like on any other Metroidvania game) trying to find various items, unlocking new areas, while leveling up. The combat is real time action, and you improve your abilities as you go.
Once you beat the game, you have the option to do Crazy mode which is a lot of fun because the gameplay is exactly like the Souls games. You have to constantly parry and dodge in order to survive.
I actually wouldn't be surprised if FromSoftware got a direct inspiration from it to make the Souls games.
In fact, the entire game campaign is designed with replayability in mind, similar to having multiple game plus runs, and it uses strategically placed save points as well, which are very useful if you are playing on @crazy where the stakes of dying are high.
The acting is like medieval theatrical plays, not like movies, so it matches perfectly the lore. The story is traditional medieval too.
The compendium encyclopedia has the most iconic medieval mythology creatures, the items are all medieval mythology as well, and the items. The attention to detail in the decoration of the castle is fantastic, and the music is simply spectacular.
These are the beginnings of the entire Castlevania IGA saga, and it was how it all started with

The game artistically is basically Symphony Of The Night, but on 3D, directed by Koji Igarashi himself.
He also worked on Curse Of Darkness that looks like it had a smaller budget, but nevertheless it was great too, just not as special as this one.
3D Castlevanias had a bad rep after the N64 debacle, so many people wasn't able to experience these amazing titles.
It is a solid 10 out 10 game hands down. I wish Bluepoint would make a 4K HDR remake of it, but I understand the game is very niche at this point.
The amazing cover artwork was done by the legendary Ayami Kojima:
I highly recommended for anyone that haven't experience it yet, and likes Metroidvania / Soulsborne games.
Keep in mind that in order to experience the Souls difficulty, you must do so by playing on @crazy mode after you beat the game once, but the game is fun all the way through, so you won't be bored gazing at the castle, and enjoying the music.
