But the soundtrack is a master work.

One of the best fantasy movies that is set in that classic world of dungeons and dragons-esque world. It's been many years since I last saw this movie, but I remember it being good, although not fantastic. Maybe I need to rewatch it so that I could get a fresh view on it. Schwarzenegger will always be Conan, because that remake or whatever the fuck it was, was terrible. Here's to hoping we can still get a King Conan movie with Schwarzenegger.

The commentary on the dvd is really good. Arnie and John Milius get drunk and wander off the reservation a lot.

When I play Golden Axe, Shadow Over Mystara, or Tower Of Doom, this is the first thing that comes to mind.
People understimate the influence these classic movies had on popular culture, Commando, Enter The Dragon, Rambo, Rocky, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and of course Conan The Barbarian.
These were authentic blockbusters that inspired artists all over the world. An influence that can still be felt even till this day.

It is a really good fantasy movie, maybe the closest the 80s got to something like Lord of the Rings. I remember watching it again around ten years ago and it still held up pretty well. It's due for a rewatch.
Being a movie that stars Arnold is just the icing on the cake. It's one of those roles he was just born to do.

Never bothered seeing the live action Conan because it simply didn't interest me.

Yes, I thought it was pretty good at the time. Haven't watched it since.

I watched it again yesterday. Arnold has enough muscles to hold up the movie alone but he doesn't even need to, as everything else about the movie is also impressive. James Earl Jones uses his wizardry in voice skills and acting, so Thulsa DOOM (awesome name, by the way) is immediately fearsome, you know the guy is bad as soon as you see his haircut. Chopping off women's heads also helps. Sandahl Bergman is a fierce warrior and has a nice rack, as every other women in the film. Mako hams up the narration and says every line in full strength. There are great views and giant sets, since this is an epic produced by Dino de Laurentiis and the guy had no idea what constraint means. Most of the movie is unexpectedly silent, which is appropriate, as muscles and swords do most of the talking and the bad guys can't speak through their broken necks. Since I'm mentioning sound, the soundtrack is one of the best ever made, truly legendary stuff. 5/5, I'm impressed that cobretti hasn't commented on this thread yet.

It is a really good fantasy movie, maybe the closest the 80s got to something like Lord of the Rings.Ever seen Willow? Willow was just a straight-up mish-mash of LOTR and Star Wars. An utterly lazy and uninspired film, but the visual design was decent enough. Considering how disgustingly derivative it was of LOTR (which wasn't even a very engrossing example of world building to begin with IMO), I'm not sure I would recommend it, though. Other examples of Conan/LOTR derivatives include Fire and Ice and The Black Cauldron. The Black Cauldron was by far the best of these three examples (it was actually based on an original story). Most of the others aren't very good, some being straight knock-offs of one or the other. James ROFL made a video about some of the infamous imitators back when he was actually cool and not just some washed-up hack who read other people's scripts: There were TONS of LOTR-esq medieval dark fantasies in the 80s, some of them like Willow were straight rip-offs of LOTR. The 80s was THE era for dark fantasy. I would know since I binge watched a ton of these films during my teenage years, and the ones I didn't discover as a teenager I had already grown up watching as a kid, such as Willow and The Black Cauldron. The Black Cauldron rules, but Willow can go f*ck off. I believe the Ranklin Bass LOTR animated films were released in the 80s, at least one of them was, Return of the King if I'm not mistaken. Have you seen those? It was literally 80s LOTR. I would just watch that instead of George Lucas crap like Willow. You can't go wrong with peak 80s japanese animation like Ranklin Bass stuff.

Ya know, I recently rewatched Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer. The thing I really loved about the first one is the tits. That movie had some good quality tits in it.
